After working on mastering reading and spelling of words and beginning to build comprehension skills, the next stage looks at developing an understanding of the following important aspects of spelling:
Phonology: Is the study of speech sounds of a language or languages, and the laws governing them
Orthography: is a set of conventions for writing a language, including norms of spelling, hyphenation, capitalisation, word breaks, emphasis, and punctuation.
Morphology: is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same language. It analyses the structure of words and parts of words such as stems, root words (base morphemes), prefixes, and suffixes. For additional information visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/teachingresources/discipline/english/literacy/readingviewing/Pages/litfocuswordmorph.aspx
Etymology: is the study of the history of the form of words and, by extension, the origin and evolution of their semantic meaning across time.
Semantics: the study of the meaning of words, phrases, sentences and text.
An acronym for this is PhOrMeS. This will be used to refer to the program from now.
PhOrMeS is a direct and explicit teaching program which commences from Year 3 and continues into Year 6.
Knox Park Primary School has adapted the PhOrMeS program to suit our needs from the program developed by Shane Pearson, who is a Speech Language Pathologist.
Shane has previously worked at Knox Park Primary School and helped to develop our direct and explicit instruction of spelling program using phonics.
Shane is leading the development of the full PhOrMeS program. For further detailed information, please visit the PhOrMeS website at: www.phormes.com/aboutphormes

In Grade 6, students build their vocabulary and spelling skills through a focus on morphology—the study of how words are formed. They explore common prefixes, suffixes, and root words (like rupt, meaning "to break") to understand how word parts carry meaning. This helps students decode unfamiliar words, make connections between related words, and use more precise vocabulary in their reading and writing. By learning about Latin and Greek roots, students gain tools to understand complex words across all areas of the curriculum.
