Introduction:
The aim of this website is to support children to develop their ability to read and spell English words accurately using proven strategies whilst also developing children's comprehension skills.
The fundamental skills needed to read and spell words include mastering the knowledge of the 70+ phonograms or codes that make up the English Language, the tools and the 31 spelling rules to read and spell words accurately using explicitly taught strategies.
This is a self guiding website that will teach:
The fundamental skills to master the English Language.
Phonemic awareness (Understanding that spoken words are made up of a sequence of sounds and the ability to identify these sounds to blend and segment).
Explicitly teach phonics (Understanding that the sounds of our language are represented by written symbols - codes).
The strategies, tools and rules required to read and spell independently and accurately.
Fluency (Be able to decode automatically to read fluently).
Building comprehension skills.
The program is organised into stages. These include:
Stage 1 - Learning all 70+ Phonograms and 100 High Frequency Words.
Stage 2 - Reading and Writing all 70+ phonograms (codes) and introduction to the Marking System.
Stage 3 - Introduction to the Spelling and Reading Tools to help spell and read words.
Stage 4 - The 31 Spelling Rules are introduced to help spell/read English words. Differentiation and Where to Next?
Stage 5 - Work through strategies to develop reading fluency and comprehension.
Stage 6 - Examines the Phonology, Orthography, Morphology, Etymology and Semantics (PhOrMeS) of words.
How to use the website:
Work on understanding and mastering the skills for each stage until they become automatic. Move to the next stage and only progress when you have mastered the stage.
