To read and spell accurately there are particular strategies, tools and rules that need to be learnt. They include:
Learning how to use The Reading and Spelling Tools.
Learning all 31 Spelling Rules (Introduced in Stage 4).
SPELLING TOOLS (See Chart Above)
When spelling an unfamiliar word we need to apply the following Spelling Tools to write the word correctly:
Example: fry
(Sound Check) Break up the words into the individual sound heard. f-r-y
(Code Match) Write the codes that match the sounds. f-r-?
(Rule Check) (if necessary) I know a rule that tells me it will not be the letter i because the letter i can't be at the end of English words so I will use y instead.
(Check Using Reading Tools) fry is correct because I checked with my reading tools.
READING TOOLS (See Chart Above)
When reading an unfamiliar word we need to apply the following Reading Tools to read the word correctly:
Example: cents
(Code Spot) Start 'code spotting' STOP I have choices for 'c' - k or 's'. c-e-n-t-s.
(Rule Check) (if necessary) I know c says 's' when the next letter is 'e'. (There is a rule for this!)
c-e-n-t-s keep 'code spotting'.
(Blend) cents
(Final Check) Red the sentence again. I know cents makes sense because the sentence makes sense.
When we train our brain regularly to use these tools and strategies they will go into the automatic file and our brain will do the thinking automatically.
There are more examples on how to apply the Spelling Tools below. Watch the tutorial video below the chart for an example on how the tools are used when spelling words.
Here is an example of how to apply the Spelling Tools with a spelling rule to spell unfamiliar words.
You will also see how the Marking System is used to support the spelling and reading of words.
Finally, the Reading Tools are then used to check for spelling accuracy.
The introduction and explanation of the spelling rules will be completed as part of Stage 4.
