Spelling Rule 7
Silent Final 'e' (SFE)
Silent Final 'e' (SFE)
Rule 7 refers to the Silent Final E or as Secret Agent Silent Final E (SFE). The letter 'e' at the end of word can have five different jobs.
Job 1: SFE jumps over a consonant to make a vowel say its second sound such as in ‘time’.
Job 2: SFE stops ‘v’ and ‘u’ from being at the end of a word such as in ‘have’ and ‘blue’.
Job 3: SFE is making ‘c’ and ‘g’ say their second sound such as in ‘ice’ and ‘change’.
Job 4: SFE is there to make sure every syllable has a vowel such as in ‘lit tle’. (little)
Job 5: SFE is there for no good reason! SFE is an imposter and doesn’t really have any job to do such as in ‘are’.
