TIME
How much time do you have to complete the task provided.
Example: "We are moving to independent practice you are going to have 15 minutes.."
Outcome
What is expected of students to complete during this amount of time
Example: "... you are going to have 15 minutes to complete 2 paragraphs of your story.
"...you are going to have 15 minutes to complete the following questions from your text book: 1, 2, 4 a-e and 6
Resources
Where and with what will students complete the outcome in the given time.
Example: "... to complete 2 paragraphs of your story, this is your draft so it will be completed in your summary book, this means all laptops sould be closed for the 15 minutes."
Noise Level
What noise level should this task be completed at.
Example: "all laptops should be closed for 15 minutes. This work will be completed in silence so everyone can focus"
"...This work will be completed at a level 4 because you will be able to speak quietly in your small groups"
*It is worth while coming up with a scale with your class i.e. 10 is a music festival 6 is group work, 2 is a quite whisper, 0 is silent.
Process
When moving into independent practice write the T - O - R - N onto the board and narrate the expected on task behaviors.
Once the expected behaviours has been determined have students repeat them back to you to check for understanding.
"How long do we have? How many paragraphs do we need to write? What level of noise did we decide"
Narrate the positives. "I like how Mark has made a great start", "fantastic job Jess using your reference book as a guide". If students are demonstrating off task behaviours redirect them back to the TORN expected behaviours that have been listed on the board.
Benefits
Time will help build a sense of urgency and allow students to self-monitor what speed they need to be completing tasks.
Outcome gives teacher the opportunities to provide consequences and rewards for those who do complete the outcome and for those who fail to complete the outcomes.
Resources should assist with student's misusing laptops if they are not required during independent practice.
Noise Level allows teachers to redirect teachers to the agreed expectations and takes away the teacher having to be 'the mean guy' by putting the emphasis on the agreed upon expectations vs your desired expectations.
