Keysborough Secondary College’s commitment to high-quality teaching and learning practices ensures consistency, evidence-based instruction, and the creation of engaging learning environments that foster academic and personal growth.
Guided by research from the Department of Education and the Australian Education Research Organisation we focus on the most effective instructional methodologies by incorporating:
· Learning Intention: Setting defined objectives for student success.
· Explicit Teaching: Providing clear, structured instruction with modelling and scaffolding.
· Scaffolding & Differentiation: Tailoring support based on student needs.
· Opportunities for Practice & Mastery: Reinforcing learning through active engagement.
· Feedback & Assessment for Learning: Continuously assessing progress and guiding improvement.
The Keysborough Secondary College Teaching and Learning Model is designed around four elements:
Engage: Engage is the foundation of learning, sparking curiosity and creating meaningful connections, Setting learning intention
Explain: Explain ensures clarity in instruction, using explicit teaching methods and scaffolded learning experiences.
Enrich: Enrich deepens understanding by encouraging students to explore, apply, and think critically, differentiated learning, applied learning.
Evaluate: Evaluate allows for reflection and assessment.
The Teaching and Learning Model is grounded in the following core principles:
· High Expectations: Setting ambitious goals for all students.
· Evidence-Based Practice: Implementing research-backed teaching strategies.
· Differentiation: Catering to diverse learning needs through adaptive instruction.
· Ongoing Assessment & Feedback: Using data-driven insights to inform instruction.
· Continuous Professional Growth: Encouraging teacher development and collaboration.
To achieve these principles, we focus on providing:
· A College-wide Teaching & Learning Model that provides consistency.
· High-Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS) to maximise student outcomes.
· A documented curriculum ensuring alignment across all year levels.
· Embedded literacy and numeracy strategies to support foundational skills.
· Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) using data for reflection to drive improvement.
· Formative & summative assessments to measure and support progress.
· Inclusive teaching & assessment practices ensuring equity for all students.
· Setting a culture of high expectations, encouraging perseverance and excellence.
The College uses a consistent lesson plan template designed to embed all four elements of our Teaching & Learning Model—Engage, Explain, Enrich, and Evaluate—into every lesson. This ensures a clear, cohesive approach across all classrooms, supporting high-quality teaching and learning experiences for every student.
As part of curriculum documentation Learning Domains are required to develop a Lesson plan bank for each unit of work. These common lesson plans support teachers to deliver a consistent and sequenced educational program.
The VTLM 2.0 introduces an emphasis on the evidence about how students learn as the basis for effective teaching. It provides increased clarity for teachers about the elements of teaching that have the strongest evidence base.
