In Term 3, Year 2 students completed an introduction to algorithms and basic coding using the Blue-Bot robots. They did a fantastic job programming the bots to complete a range of tasks.
Blue-Bots are a newer version of the Bee-Bot floor robots that have been used in previous years. Blue-Bots can operate on their own or via Bluetooth controlled by an iPad. They are transparent so that the students can see all of the parts that make it work.
Students created mazes using classroom items. They then had to enter all the movements that the Blue-Bot would need to take to get to the end of the maze. This was a great opportunity for students to understand that an algorithm is a sequence of steps whilst also learning to plan out movements using positional language such as left, right, forwards and backwards.
The students then explored the Dash robots using the Dash Go app on the iPads to control them. These robots are able to be programmed to talk, move, make sounds and change colour. Year 2 had a fantastic time using the Dash apps on the iPads to program the robot to navigate a track and make a range of animal sounds and sound effects.
Year 2 focussed on animals in Term 3. To further explore this topic, students researched an animal using the iPads. Students learnt how to search for information and how to ensure that they used reliable sources for their information. Once the students had completed their research, they created informative green screen videos. In small groups, students recorded themselves talking about their chosen animal in front of a piece of green material. Once the students had recorded their videos, they used the DoInk Green Screen app on the iPads to edit the video. They used the Chroma Key function to remove the green background from the video. They then searched the internet for an appropriate image of their chosen animal and then inserted this image into the background of their video.
The students did a remarkable job editing their Green Screen Videos.
