At the start of Term 1, Year 2 students looked at Podcasts during their Technology Time. The students started off by listening to a wide range of children's podcasts and discussing what they liked and what they didn't like. Students then explored the ABC Kids Listen app on the iPads. You can also access these programs by clicking on the link below.
As a class, they focussed on the Story Salad Podcast. In this podcast the presenters are given three random words that are sent in from ABC Kids listeners. They then have 2 minutes to make up a story that includes all three words. The year 2 students had a go at making up their own Story Salads. They selected three random words from a box of word cards. In groups, they then recorded their own Story Salad Podcast using the GarageBand app on the iPads.
In following lessons, students explored a broad range of children's podcasts and looked at podcasts with an interview style format. They were given the task of writing down five questions that they could ask someone in their class so that they could learn more about each other. Once this was complete, students worked in groups to record their interviews using GarageBand. They then edited their recordings and added music elements to make their podcast more interesting and engaging.

If you and your children would like to make your own podcasts at home using the GarageBand app, you can follow this guide made by Mrs Rilatt. The students used these guides during their lessons.

Once students had completed their podcasts, they explored simple block coding using the code.org website. Students worked with a partner to progress through the coding activities with support from their teachers. The students did a great job dragging the blocks of code so that they clicked together. This is a free website that you can complete at home. Click on the link to explore the lessons students started in class.
