In Term 1, Kindergarten students completed an introduction to algorithms and basic coding using the Blue-Bot robots. They did a fantastic job programming the bots to complete a range of tasks.
Blue-Bots are a newer version of the Bee-Bot floor robots that have been used in previous years. Blue-Bots can operate on their own or via Bluetooth controlled by an iPad. They are transparent so that the students can see all of the parts that make it work.
Students first explored the concept of coding by using arrow cards and placing them in a sequence. Students then asked a peer to act as the robot and complete the actions on the cards. Once the students had developed an awareness that an algorithm is a series of steps, they moved onto entering their algorithms directly into the Blue-Bot as they attempted to make the robot navigate the mat to retell the Nursery Rhyme, Hickory Dickory Dock. They also programmed the Blue-Bots to move to the matching farm animal pictures on the grid mat.
To explore positional language, students were also required to program the Blue-Bots to go 'under' bridges, 'next to' counters and 'behind' cups.
Students also explored the Dash robots. These robots are able to be programmed to talk, move, make sounds and change colour. Kindergarten had a fantastic time using the Dash apps on the iPads to program the robot to navigate a track and make a range of animal sounds and sound effects.
