In Term 4, Kindergarten students further explored coding by creating stories using the ScratchJr app on the iPads. It uses a programming language that is accessible to young children. If you would like to learn more about ScratchJr, check out the following video about the application.
Students were initially introduced to the programming language by using printed versions of the blocks to arrange into an appropriate sequence. Once the students had placed the cardboard blocks in the correct order on the velcro strip, they then handed their code to a partner who had the job of acting out the sequence of steps outlined by the block print outs. Students did a great job grasping this concept.
Once the students were comfortable with the different blocks and how they are used within the code, they then explored the application and programmed the cat character (sprite), in the app, to move around the page.
The students then used the Scratch Jr app to program two different characters to act out the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme. Watch the video to see what the students recreated step-by-step with the teacher.
Students then created their own quick projects using the skills that they had learnt. They were able to change the characters, make them move and some were able to record their voices to make them talk.

To finish the term, students explored Green Screen Filming.
Kindergarten learnt about all the different recording tools in our Darcy Road Public School Green Screen Kits and they also discovered how to set up a tripod and iPad mount. They also learnt about peripheral devices as they attached microphones and lights to the iPad to enhance the recording.
During the term, students had been exploring the topic of the weather and the different clothes you would wear in different climates. To further explore this topic, students pretended to be weather presenters while standing in front of a green piece of material. It was wonderful to see the students talking in front of the class with such confidence and enthusiasm.
Once the students had completed filming their weather reports, it was then time to edit their videos. Some of the Kindergarten students had the opportunity, prior to the end of the term, to work in pairs to edit the final video. The first step was to insert the video into the Do Ink Green Screen app and then remove the green background using the Chroma Key settings. The next step was adding the background and completing the weather video.
