Mathematics Extension 2 is a one-unit course offered only for the HSC. There is no Preliminary Mathematics Extension 2 course.
Mathematics Extension 2 offers a deeper and more extensive treatment of certain topics than is offered in other Mathematics courses. It represents a distinctly high level in school mathematics involving the development of considerable manipulative skill and a high degree of understanding of the fundamental ideas of algebra and calculus. These topics are treated in some depth.
Mathematics Extension 2 is for students who have excelled at Year 11 Mathematics Extension 1 and is generally taught concurrently to Year 12 Mathematics Extension 1.

Students are only able to study the Year 12 Extension 2 course providing they have completed the Year 11 Advanced and Year 11 Extension 1 courses. The Year 12 Extension 2 course is studied simultaneously with the Year 12 Advanced and Extension 1 courses.
Note: The Extension 2 course is generally not fully timetabled during the school day and will often involve lessons outside school hours, for example before or after school.
Coursework
Complete all class work and regularly attend to homework and revision.
Suitable Candidates
Students who have excelled in the Year 11 Advanced and Extension 1 courses, and are willing and able to devote a considerable amount of time to mathematics study throughout year 12.
Career paths
Mathematics Extension 2 is for gifted students who wish to pursue pure Mathematics at a tertiary level.
Equipment Required
Mathematics Extension 2 requires a scientific calculator—preferably a Casio fx-82au plus II.
