Mathematics Extension 1 is a 1 unit course that is studied as an additional class on top of the Mathematics Advanced course. Students studying Mathematics Extension 1 deepen their knowledge of mathematical concepts and explore further skills and ideas in Mathematics.
Mathematics Extension 1 students enjoy the challenge of learning mathematics at a high level. Students who have excelled at Stage 5.3 may be asked to consider this option.
Mathematics Extension 1 is focused on enabling students to develop a thorough understanding of and competence in further aspects of mathematics. Students of Mathematics Extension 1 will be able to develop an appreciation of the interconnected nature of mathematics, its beauty and its functionality.
Mathematics Extension 1 provides a basis for progression to further study in mathematics or related disciplines in which mathematics has a vital role at a tertiary level. An understanding and exploration of Mathematics Extension 1 is also advantageous for further studies in such areas as science, engineering, finance and economics.

Note: The extension 1 course is generally not fully timetabled during the school day and will often involve lessons outside school hours, for example before or after school.

Suitable Candidates
This is a challenging and time-consuming course which is best suited to students who are extremely passionate about mathematics and have an exceptional understanding of most Year 10 5.3 outcomes. These students would have achieved outstanding results in the Year 10 A maths class and also have undertaken the Stage 5 Elective - Mathematics Extension.

Mathematics Extension 1 provides an appropriate background for students who wish to study Mathematics as a major discipline at tertiary level and support courses such as science and engineering.
