Modern History provides students with opportunities to develop and apply their understanding of methods and issues involved in the investigation of people, ideas, movements, events and developments that have shaped the modern world.
The HSC Course is designed for students to investigate national and international forces for change and continuity in the twentieth century through 4 major studies.
Nature of Modern History including case studies e.g. the Holocaust and/or the Bounty Mutiny
Historical Investigation where students develop and present their own historical investigation.
The Shaping of the Modern World including case studies of The Downfall of the Romanovs, Age of Imperialism and the Making of South Africa.
Core Study: Power and Authority in the Modern World 1919–1946
A National Study e.g. Iran 1945-1989 or Russia 1917-1941
‘Peace and Conflict’ topic e.g. Conflict in the Gulf 1980-2011 or Conflict in Europe 1935-1945
'Change in the Modern World’ topic e.g. Apartheid in South Africa
Prerequisites
Must have successfully completed Year 11 Modern History
Coursework
Complete all set tasks including note making, set reading, participation in group work, analysis of sources. Organise and complete notes and revision summaries, use evidence and historiographical exercises, read historical novels and view historical films covered in their scaffold, practise past papers- structured answers, essays.
Suitable Candidates
Students who wish to develop their understanding of modern historical issues, enhance their research skills, show an ability to use evidence and enjoy learning about people and events. Students who have empathy for other cultures, are interested in people and events and feel they are capable of collecting, analysing, organising and communicating ideas and information are ideal historians.
