C1 – stylistic understanding and topic representation
A successful composition that demonstrates a thorough understanding of the roles and techniques of the performing media within the art music style. Pitch material, relationships between instruments and compositional techniques have been effectively explored to convey the genre.
C2 – understanding of musical concepts and the relationships between them
A clear structure is evident and supports an understanding of the use of dynamic contrast and compositional development. The relationship of the sections is not always clear and balanced. Effective use of rhythmic interplay, imitation and doubling is evident which demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between the musical concepts. The exploration of timbral contrast is effective. The choice of flute, bass clarinet and vibraphone provides a pleasing tone colour contrast. The student is proficient in maintaining unity across the composition.
C3 – knowledge of score conventions and performance directions
The score employs appropriate performance directions and a clear understanding of the instruments’ capabilities. Dynamics and phrasing are well presented and support a coherent musical outcome. There are some inconsistencies in regard to the rhythmic groupings of the vibraphone at times. Detailed articulations are included and support the ‘mood’ of each section. The score is clearly set out and demonstrates a detailed knowledge and understanding of score conventions.
