C1 – stylistic understanding and topic representation
The composition communicates an overall direction and successfully displays an understanding of compositional techniques such as ostinato, syncopation and vocal harmonisation. A clear grasp of style is presented. Consideration of an effective structure within the time constraints is somewhat successful, however does not allow the student to fully develop their musical ideas.
C2 – understanding of musical concepts and the relationships between them
The structure is clearly defined with a successful overall direction achieved. The melodic and harmonic material could have been further developed, though the textural exploration appears appropriate. Use of the performing media is somewhat restricted with the drum set only minimally employed in the chorus. There was scope here to explore more contrasting and varied harmonic choices to fully realise the pitch possibilities. Instrumental techniques in the drum set and guitar were also simple and could have been extended further.
C3 - knowledge of score conventions and performance directions
The score has some interpretative directions, though they are somewhat restricted in phrasing and dynamic demands. There are multiple inconsistencies between the rhythmic notation and the audio recording which detracts from the score accuracy.
