C1 – stylistic understanding and topic representation
This composition displays a clear understanding of the stylistic demands of a violin duet. At times, a clear differentiation of the two parts is not always achieved. The topic ‘Music of the last 25 years (Australian focus)’ is coherently represented through the application of art music stylistic features. This includes the successful integration of expressive and extended techniques, extensive use of dynamic and articulatory contrast, dissonant pitch material and the interplay between both violin parts.
C2 – understanding of musical concepts and the relationships between them
There is evidence of a detailed knowledge of the demands of the violin. The composition explores many of the timbral possibilities and displays a clear grasp of structure. An understanding of the musical concepts is clear with a variety of compositional devices employed such as imitation, interplay and transposition. The pitch material used is sophisticated and purposeful. Climactic points are convincing due to the combination and relationships between rhythm, pitch, dynamics and expressive techniques. This demonstrates perceptive and accomplished understanding of the musical concepts and the relationships between them.
C3 – knowledge of score conventions and performance directions
The composition appears to successfully present and organise musical material, though a little restricted in fully exploring the development of the musical ideas. The performance directions are extensive to enable the style to be fully realised. Overall, the presentation of the score is highly detailed, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of score conventions and performance directions appropriate to the chosen topic.
