Self-compassion
We all have moments when we're hard on ourselves—after making a mistake, facing a setback, or simply not meeting our own expectations. Self-compassion is about treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding we'd offer a good friend during difficult times.
Research shows that self-compassion helps people cope better with challenges, reduces anxiety and stress, and supports overall wellbeing. Rather than ignoring our struggles or being overly critical, self-compassion involves acknowledging when things are hard, recognising that difficulty is a normal part of life, and responding to ourselves with care rather than harsh judgment.
For children and young people, learning self-compassion can build resilience, improve how they handle setbacks, and support healthier relationships with themselves and others.
