Artist Statement

As an artist during my years of drawing I’ve seen other artists create characters of themselves or friends along with presenting themselves in their art as some form of self-portrait. These artworks can go from emotions to interests and maybe even hidden thoughts and feelings. Self-portraits are subjective, holding multiple emotions towards one’s self or towards a certain subject about them. My collection of work is called ‘Mirror Reflections’. It’s within the subjective frame containing different emotions and perspectives on how I see myself and how I want others to see me.

For my material practice I used pencils and felt tip pens for the colouring and line of the artworks. The drawings are a fusion of imagery and text with each drawing having words scattered around central images, some words more hidden than others. My artworks have aspects from both anime and manga styling along with the vibrancy of pop art, the drawing style has aspects from anime and manga art styles for the person or ‘me’ in the work, however, features of pop art are seen with the bright yet soft colours used for each artwork. By using pencil shavings and a tissue to blend and smudge I’ve attained a soft watercolour look. In one drawing, I've used the same pencils to create a heavy outline for the character while with the other there is only a thin lining by fluro felt tip pen.
