Artist statement

Being an Indigenous woman I take pride in my culture and really wanted my artworks to reflect my cultural background. From a frame perspective my work is viewed as a cultural artwork that explores the traditions and history of my culture. Being an Aboriginal woman I’ve explored the use of traditional methods through the use of traditional dot painting, the technique of sponging the background, and cross-hatching.

My main influence is contemporary artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye. She was one of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists, producing over 3000 paintings within her eight years of painting. Kngwarreye’s conceptual practice is strongly linked with her traditional background with a focus on visually retelling dreamtime stories.

My conceptual practice is the balance between nature and my heritage of being an Indigenous person, to recreate the connection between Indigenous culture and nature, as Indigenous people believe that each person is entrusted with the cultural knowledge and responsibility to care for the land they identify with through kinship systems. I've balanced the use of nature and traditional art making techniques in my artwork. The animals displayed in my art making are fish, turtle, squid and the water dragon.
