Burwood Girls High School

Burwood Girls High School is situated in Croydon, an inner western suburb of Sydney in the Eora nation.

The Runaway Apple

The Runaway Apple was created when students from Burwood High School were instructed to develop a series of photographs that told a story without the use of words. Zoe took influence from her favourite times of the day – this being recess and lunchtime. This series follows an apple as it escapes her lunch box and explores the school grounds before dutifully returning to Zoe herself.

The Runaway Apple - refer to the long text description that follows.

The Runaway Apple – long text description

The Runaway Apple is a collage of images with an apple as the central focus in various settings. It consists of 10 photographs arranged in columns: 3 in the first column, 4 in the second column and 3 in the third column. The images appear on a yellow, peach-pink mottled background with the words 'The Runaway Apple by Zoe Lake' written on the lower left and the lower right corners, respectively.

Image 1 shows the apple balancing on the edge of a healthy lunch in a clear compartmentalised lunchbox on a wooden outdoor table.

Image 2 shows the apple a short distance from the lunch box on the table.

Image 3 shows the apple in a pile of red-hued autumn leaves

Image 4 shows the apple sitting on the keys of a shiny black piano with a gold Yamaha brand logo.

Image 5 shows the apple hiding in the foreground of a flower crown made up of wattle, grevillea, foliage and coloured pom-poms. The crown is worn by a multi-coloured statue of a cow with a blue snout that is partially visible.

Image 6 shows the apple in the centre of a bright green agave plant which is in full sun, its pointed leaves making striking shadows.

Image 7 shows the apple sitting on the edge of a dark, rusted cylinder. The perspective is looking up towards the apple from the bottom of the cylinder. It stands out against a washed-out blue sky, interspersed by tree branches.

Image 8 shows the apple on the table next to the now empty lunchbox it originally escaped from. Comparing the full sun and different shadows between this and the first 2 images indicates that time has passed since it escaped.

Image 9 shows the apple returned to its original lunchbox compartment on the table.

Image 10 shows the apple being held to the lips of a girl with dark hair and dark-rimmed glasses who is wearing a school uniform. The girl and the apple are in sharp focus. The outdoor surroundings, which include a yellow hue autumn tree, are in soft focus behind her.

What do the teachers have to say?

'I am so incredibly proud of Zoe's digital work this term. She learned how to use the digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera to take hundreds of photographs. From all of them, she worked to choose which photographs she liked best. In collaboration with me and her Student Learning Support Officer (SLSO), she learnt basic editing techniques on Adobe Photoshop in order to enhance her images.' Matthew (teacher)
