AIM OF TODAY'S SESSION
The focus of today’s session is to cultivate a deeper understanding of classroom management. We bring a wide range of experiences —from seasoned veterans to those newer to the profession - each offering valuable insights into managing diverse classroom environments. Today, we aim to harness some of this collective wisdom, sharing and building upon it so that we can all continue to refine and enhance our management techniques. Let’s make the most of this opportunity to learn from one another, enriching our skills to better support and engage our students.
One person from the group will need to login to the teacher's computer and display this page on the screen. If the first person who enters the room can do this, that will help us to get set up as quickly as possible. The videos will be viewed as a group. Simply follow the instructions below.
Think (3 minutes):
Each teacher independently writes down 2 common mistakes they believe occur in classroom management on the Post-It Notes provided. Use the categories below to help stimulate ideas:
Communication: Mistakes in how instructions, expectations, or feedback are conveyed.
Consistency: Issues with applying rules and consequences uniformly.
Emotional Response: Inappropriate or counterproductive responses to student behavior.
Classroom Setup: Physical or organisational aspects that negatively impact management.
Pair (3 - 4 minutes):
Teachers pair up to discuss the mistakes they listed. Staff are encouraged to explain why they think these are mistakes and share any brief personal experiences related to these errors.
Each pair chooses one mistake they agree is particularly impactful or common to share with the larger group.
Share (4 - 5 minutes):
Each pair quickly shares their TWO selected mistakes with the group.

Run Time: 15 mins
We have all dealt with defiant behaviour in our classrooms. Share with your colleagues a recent experience with a student and how this played out. We don't always get it right and we are certainly not alone. Discuss and share strategies that have worked and perhaps what isn't working for you with your colleagues.

Thank you all for your active participation and valuable contributions today. We've explored a variety of perspectives and strategies on managing our classrooms as well as looking at defiant behaviors, each enriching our understanding and toolkit. As we move forward, let’s keep the dialogue open with one another and continue to share our successes and challenges. Remember, the strength of our staff lies in our collective experiences and willingness to support each other.
