DAY 1

After receiving a warm welcome and learning a bit about the school history we were happy to attend various classes (English, math, dance). We were seduced by the overall peaceful and joyful atmosphere in the school and the schedule consistent with students and teachers’ needs, with time and places to relax. We were also impressed by how well the classrooms are equipped and each student having his own computer.

DAY 2

The morning was dedicated to classes and more in-depth discussions about the school system with various teachers, as well as a very pleasant lunch at the City Hall. Ideas about how we could improve our classes start to emerge. Then we had the opportunity to attend the graduation ceremony with an impressive music and choreographic performance.

DAY 3

Sightseeing and culture was on our agenda on Independence Day. We had been recommended to visit Suomenlinna, which was great advice: we discovered a spectacular fortress and picturesque buildings, surrounded by snow and a rocky shore lit up by the bright winter sun. To finish the day just as locals do we watched the traditional handshaking ceremony and president ball.

DAY 4

The day started with a rehearsal of the Christmas choir, followed by enriching exchanges with the school principal and various classes : geography, English oral course and psychology with school dog Woitto providing a calming and comforting presence. In the evening we were delighted to attend the school’s breath-taking Christmas concert at Temppelaukion Church.

DAY 5

We were invited to a history class for an interesting chat with students and question session related to Belgium. Our job shadowing week ended with a Finnish class and tasting of delicious Christmas cake.

Considering all this we can only be satisfied with this immersion into the Finnish education system and culture. It is a very valuable experience, which makes us feel like implementing changes in our classes, notably by creating a learning environment allowing more time for students to construct meaning and understand the key concepts of our subjects, with less pressure and more focus on their well-being.

We feel grateful to all the teachers and students who received us and made us feel integrated into Sibelius Lukio school life and activities organized in the local community.
