Edon Northwest Local School is committed to good health and wellness for our students.
To assist Parents and Guardians we created this page to bring you important health information.
Ohio Department of Health Hearing Screening Guidelines
School-aged students shall be screened at six grade levels: Kindergarten, first, third, fifth, ninth and eleventh grades.
Ohio Department of Health Vision Screening Guidelines
School-aged students shall be screened at seven grade levels: Kindergarten, first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth and eleventh grades.
Screening for kindergartners can be performed during the April screenings prior to fall entry for those that can attend, or in the fall once students begin school. Other screenings will be done in the fall.
Students should bring or wear their glasses and/or contact lenses as they are screened wearing them. Students who have difficulty with the initial screening are re-screened. If there still appears to be a difficulty, parents are notified and follow-up by a health care provider is suggested.
We are also happy to screen students at any time based on parent, student or staff request.
If you do not wish for your child to be screened, please contact your school health office.
Guidelines For Keeping Sick Students Home From School
Fever
The child should remain home with a temperature of 100.0 or greater. The child may return to school after being fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine, such as Tylenol or ibuprofen. https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/fever.html
Diarrhea/Vomiting
A child with 2 or more episodes of diarrhea and/or vomiting should stay at home and only return to school after being symptom free for 24 hours. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/brat-diet/
Pink Eye
If eye discharge or crusting is present, student should remain home and they should be seen by their primary care provider for diagnosis. If determined to be pink eye and placed on antibiotics, the student should remain home for 24 hours. If the eye is just red and no drainage is present and there are no other symptoms, the student may be in attendance.
Strep Throat
The child should be kept home, treated with antibiotics, and may return 24 hours after the antibiotics have taken effect.
Head Lice
The child should be kept home until their hair is treated and there is no evidence of live lice.
If you think your child may have a contagious illness and are awaiting results/information from a physician, please do not send your child to school.
A sick child cannot learn effectively and is unable to participate in classes in a meaningful way. Keeping a sick child home prevents the spread of illness in the community and allows the child opportunity to rest and recover.
Thank you for your attention and consideration to this concern. If you have any questions please call 419-272-3213 ask for the school nurse.

Meningitis
Is a potentially fatal illness that may strike at any time. Nearly 10% of those affected, will die from the disease. In some cases-even with treatment-this disease can potentially kill an otherwise healthy young person in less than 48 hours. Those who survive the disease may suffer hearing loss, brain damage and loss of limbs.
A person can catch meningitis by having contact with someone who has the bacteria in their nose or throat (some may not even be sick/or have symptoms, but still be spreading the disease).
Why take a chance? Most adolescent cases in the US (up to 83%) could potentially be prevented by a single vaccination that has proved to be safe. The state requires students entering 7th and 12th grade (2016-2017) to have one dose before school entrance. This vaccine is available at the Williams County Health Department and many local pharmacies.
