Universities in the USA offer scholarships to athletes across numerous sports enabling students to pursue high level sport and academics while having the experience of living overseas.
Each year 5-10 Lake G students accept scholarship offers from Division I & II Universities and Junior Colleges all over the USA in sports such as Basketball, Soccer, Athletics and American Football.
To gain eligibility for US scholarship offers, follow the following steps.
The NCAA bases eligibility on the last 4 years of High School (Years 9-12).
Across these 4 years they expect you to complete a certain number of 'Core Courses'.
They are:
8 semesters of English
6 semesters of Maths
4 semesters of Natural or Physical Science
4 semesters of Social Science
an extra 2 semesters of English or Maths or Science
an extra 8 semesters of any Core Course plus Language

Your GPA is your Grade Point Average. For a Division I scholarship offer you must have a GPA of at least 2.3.
It is calculated by averaging the grades you get for your Core Courses where
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1.
E is treated as a 'Fail' grade and does not count as a Core Course.
Visit the NCAA Eligibility Centre website to Register your interest and start your application. The Eligibility Centre will walk you through the process of applying and remind you at different times throughout the year about what you need to complete and documentation you need to provide.
You will be issued an NCAA ID Number. Make sure you keep note of this number!
As part of your application to the Eligibility Centre you will need to provide your grades from the beginning of Year 9 until the end of Year 12.
These documents need to be sent directly from the school.
Contact Cuz (glenn.currie@ed.act.edu.au) or John Fox (john.fox@ed.act.edu.au) who will be able to facilitate this process.
The SAT is a Standardized College Admissions Test meant to show schools how prepared you are for college by measuring key skills like reading comprehension, computational ability and clarity of expression. Because so many students take the test, it also provides schools with data about how you compare to your peers nationwide.
The total score is the sum of the two section scores; its range is 400–1600. A benchmark score is 1010 and a score above 1200 will put you in the top 25% of students.
It is similar to the AST test you sit here in Canberra to receive an ATAR.
You can prepare for the SAT by practicing past test papers, completing an online practice test or using Khan Academy to practice different questions and identify areas you need to work on.
Lake G is a test site for the SAT, offering sittings 3 times per year (March, May and December). Seats are limited and test dates book out quickly so it is best to check the available dates and make your booking well in advance. Use the link below to find a test centre (hopefully Lake G) that will work for you.
If you are performing at a high enough level in your sport, Universities will already know you and will start offering you scholarships.
But, for most of us, we need to be proactive in seeking a scholarship.
Draft an email that includes information about you (Name, DOB, NCAA ID#, contact information, etc), your sport, your achievements (both sporting and academic) and your academic aspirations. Attach a PDF of your NCAA Planner so they can check your Core Courses and estimated GPA, and also include any video highlights of you playing.
Then, send this to the Athletic Department of any school you would be interested in attending. Find the school's contact details online and consider applying to all levels of college: Division I, Division II and Junior.
