All students who successfully complete college will receive an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate upon graduation.
There are two standard academic packages:
'Accredited Package' where students will graduate with an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate
'Tertiary Package' where students will graduate with an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate plus an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank)
Each package has different requirements.
For an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate, you must complete 17 standard semester units.
For an 'A' Package, four minors are required - three minors PLUS an English minor in at least 3 different course areas.
Checking course areas is necessary as classes could fall under the same course. For example, English T and Literature T are in the same course area. They are noted on your academic record.
This package is for students who wish to undertake a vocation, move into the workforce or intend to enter university as a mature age student.
Regardless of your package, A or T, Year 12 students can enrol in UC Connect, a university bridging program available in the final semester of Year 12. Information regarding UC Connect will be published annually by Student Services in Semester 1.
For an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), you must complete 20 standard semester units.
For a ‘T’ package you are required to complete a package made up of one of the following: 5 major courses, 4 majors and 1 minor, or 3 majors and 3 minors.
This package is for students who wish to go to university directly after completing college.
Students completing a 'T' package will be required to sit the ACT Scaling Test (AST).
This is an interview with Martin Watson, the Executive Director of the ACT's Board of Senior Secondary Studies, aimed at helping people develop a clearer understanding of how Year 11 and 12 works for students in the ACT.

A course is a subject such as English, Food for Life or Beginning Spanish. Courses are divided into 4 units. A standard full unit (1.0) is a unit that is one semester in length; a half unit (0.5) is usually a term in length.
A major needs to be at least 3.5 units (three semesters and 1 term) while a minor is only 2 units (two semesters).
Courses are classified by a letter indicating their type.
T Courses - contributes points for Senior Secondary Certificate plus a score towards an ATAR.
A Courses - contributes points towards Senior Secondary Certificate.
C Courses - competency based course at college. Contributes points towards Senior Secondary Certificate.
H Courses - a course completed at either ANU or UC and studied while at college. These courses contribute points for Senior Secondary Certificate plus a score towards an ATAR.
M Courses - available only to students with recognised disability. Contributes points towards Senior Secondary Certificate and ATAR.
E Courses - competency based courses external to college usually as part of an ASbA or run by employers. Contributes points towards Senior Secondary Certificate.
A registered unit, referred to as a R-unit, is usually designed to provide personal development, recreational or community service activities.
R units are calculated based on hours that you have attended or participated in an activity, and there are different valued R-units to reflect hours spent engaged. For example, a 0.2 R-unit = 11 hours while a 0.5 R-unit = 27.5 hours.
All students will receive an R-unit each semester for their participation in Monday's Support Group (SG). However, if you miss an SG you cannot cover your absence in the same way as a normal class.
Student may also receive an R-unit for a class if they have attended enough hours, but have not submitted 70% of assessment.
For information on extracurricular R-units visit the 'Community' page.
For R-units that provide enrichment opportunities and academic support, visit the 'Academic Programs' page.
