In this hands-on workshop you will explore some of the many possibilities for working with clay in your classroom and particularly for creating exciting surfaces using simple and cheap techniques. You will play with coloured slips using mono printing, layering, resists, and sgraffito.
Recipes for making cheap reliable slips and ideas for moulding forms at low or no cost will also be provided.
Jo Townsend is currently the Education Program Manager at Canberra Potters. She is also takes occasional classes and specialist workshops. Jo’s previous experience as a secondary school arts teacher places her well to share her knowledge and skills with her students and fellow teaching staff.
Her personal work is essentially tactile; her forms, both sculptural and functional, invite interaction from the user. She builds surfaces, colours and curves that invite the touch and is inspired by the fact that forms and patterns repeat in nature. Tree roots branch out in the same way that rivulets run, flames flicker and branches divide.
