CTEC Celebrates 15 Newly Certified Phlebotomists!
We are proud to announce that Baton Rouge has welcomed 15 new phlebotomists, all trained and certified through the Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC). This accomplishment highlights the incredible work being done in our Health Sciences pathways as we continue preparing skilled medical professionals for our region.
These newly certified phlebotomists are now qualified to perform essential clinical tasks such as drawing blood for laboratory tests, transfusions, and life-saving donations. Their achievement not only demonstrates their hard work and dedication but also strengthens the healthcare workforce in our community.
Congratulations to our students and instructors for reaching this important milestone. CTEC continues to lead the way in creating high-quality, career-ready graduates who make a meaningful impact from day one.
Southeast Middle School is doing outstanding work connecting classroom learning to real-world experiences in their CTE classes. This year, students applied their skills by designing and creating products for sale, gaining hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, marketing, and production.
Their hard work was proudly showcased at the Broadmoor Arts and Crafts Festival, where students displayed a wide variety of student-made items for the community. This authentic learning experience allowed students to see how creativity, craftsmanship, and business skills come together beyond the classroom. We applaud Southeast Middle School for fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and real-world readiness in their CTE programs!

On November 7, Northeast High School proudly paid tribute to the courageous veterans and military families of the Chaneyville and Northeast community. The NHS JROTC program held a special Veterans Appreciation Breakfast, hosting local service members and their loved ones for a morning of fellowship and gratitude.
Through their student-led “Dime Fundraiser,” NHS JROTC cadets collected funds with purpose, demonstrating servant leadership by paying it forward to honor those who have served. Their initiative reflects the deep respect and appreciation our scholars hold for our nation’s heroes.
We salute the veterans in our community and applaud the NHS JROTC cadets for their dedication to service, humility, and honoring others. 💙❤️
We extend our sincere appreciation to the JROTC cadres of Northeast High School and Glen Oaks High School for representing their schools with pride at the Red Stick Veterans' Week Youth Kickoff Celebration held at Southern University.
The Northeast High Color Guard delivered an absolutely superior performance, earning high praise from event organizers and attendees. Students from both programs participated in a powerful ceremony featuring outstanding performances by Helix Mentorship Academy’s soloists, marching band, choir, and dancers. Louisiana Supreme Court Justice, the Honorable John Guidry, delivered an inspiring keynote address—one widely regarded as one of the most impactful Veterans' Day speeches in recent years. His message resonated deeply with veterans, families, and students in attendance.
We are proud of our cadets for their discipline, professionalism, and commitment to honoring our nation’s heroes. Be sure to view the attached photos highlighting their participation and excellence.
Northdale Academy opened its campus to more than 400 students from across the district on Thursday for an immersive, hands-on Agriculture and STEM Showcase—an event that brought leadership, creativity, and real-world learning to life.
Students explored a wide range of interactive stations, including live animal encounters, hydroponics demonstrations, drone technology, nutrition workshops, arts and agriculture exhibits, and Northdale’s impressive student-led FFA and academic booths. Each experience highlighted the innovation, skill, and enthusiasm thriving within Northdale’s programs.
This dynamic showcase not only celebrated STEM and agricultural education but also empowered students to imagine new possibilities for their futures. Northdale Academy continues to shine as a model for engaging, experiential learning across the district.
Our Workforce Development Department was proud to participate in the recent Louisiana Jump$tart Coalition gathering, where partners from across the state came together to celebrate a successful year of advancing financial literacy for students. Each summer, a select group of high school juniors, seniors, and recent graduates from across the region step into ExxonMobil Baton Rouge’s state-of-the-art facilities to participate in one of the most competitive and impactful STEM workforce development programs in the state. The ExxonMobil High School Internship Program, now in its fifth year, has expanded from just six interns in 2021 to 36 students in 2025, chosen from a pool of more than 600 applicants.
This isn’t a typical internship—students complete the same onboarding as full-time ExxonMobil employees, receive workplace safety training, and spend seven to eight weeks embedded in departments such as Mechanical, Engineering, Environmental, Laboratory, and Information Technology. Interns gain hands-on experience alongside industry professionals, developing technical skills through activities like installing pumps, shadowing machinists, and exploring systems in electrical and instrumentation engineering.
The program also prioritizes whole-student development, offering weekly professional growth sessions, résumé-building workshops, college tours, and community service experiences with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and the United Cajun Navy. Interns learn one of the most valuable lessons early: networking matters. As returning intern and Woodlawn High graduate Reagan Rodgers advises, “Talk to everybody. Build connections that could help you in your future career.”
ExxonMobil’s internship is part of a comprehensive workforce pipeline that engages students from elementary school to college, offering STEM activities, mentorship, educator externships, and even free craft training through the North Baton Rouge Industrial Training Initiative.
By investing deeply in local talent, ExxonMobil is helping prepare a diverse and skilled workforce for the Gulf Coast region—opening doors for future engineers, technicians, and innovators, including many of our own CTEC scholars.

Because of your participation, more than 1,200 students had the opportunity to explore hands-on activities, meet industry professionals, and discover exciting possibilities within the construction industry.
We loved seeing students engaging with exhibitors, asking great questions, and diving into each activity with enthusiasm. Your energy helped make the event a huge success and reminded us exactly why we do what we do.
ABC Pelican and ABC Bayou appreciate the time and effort it took to coordinate your visit, and we hope your students left inspired by the career paths they explored. We’re already looking forward to next year and can’t wait to see even more schools participate.
Thank you again for being part of this incredible experience and for helping us continue building the future together.

Over the past ten years, competitive video gaming has grown into a recognized career option. At Woodlawn High School in East Baton Rouge Parish, students now have the opportunity to explore this fast-growing field through the school’s Esports program.
Team members are not only sharpening their skills in competition but also gaining valuable experience by planning and running tournaments.
“Our events give students the chance to rotate through different roles,” explained Jeffery Harrison, EBR Schools Director of Network Operations & Esports. “Some students handle broadcasting, others serve as play-by-play announcers or color commentators, and many prepare research notes on the players’ backgrounds and performance history. It’s a hands-on learning experience that mirrors what happens in professional Esports.”

"If you went to the game last night, you may have seen something different from the JROTC department. What you saw was the future of the program. I have been here four years, and I have never seen so many cadets motivated and dedicated to the program. What you saw was 11 cadets who dedicated their time, some of which were splitting time with other extracurricular activities, to learn the art of drill. And that was not all of them, we probably had at least 5-8 more who wanted to do it but couldn't make it yesterday. Oh, and 99% of them are 9th graders! If you have these cadets in your class, please share with them how proud you are of them. They are really making a difference in our program, and they make it easy for CSM Wheeler and me to come to work every day."
