ExxonMobil officially kicked off the second cohort of its education initiative, Leaders Inspiring the Faces of Tomorrow (LIFT). The initiative pairs 26 middle school students with mentors to promote career readiness and academic success, with a focus on introducing students to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) within the energy industry.
LIFT, first launched in January of this year, successfully concluded its inaugural cohort in mid-July. The program positively impacted student performance, leading to significant improvements in both mathematics and science grades. Students at Scotlandville Middle School saw a 67% increase in mathematics grades, while Istrouma Middle Magnet School students experienced a 42% increase in science grades. Additionally, one in five participants demonstrated improvement in both subjects. Importantly, most students reported growth in social and emotional learning (SEL) during the four months of mentorship.
This year’s program will focus on Istrouma Middle Magnet School, enrolling 26 mentees, half of whom are returning students eager to continue their STEM education journey. The program will run through the 2024-2025 school year, emphasizing building mentor relationships during the fall, with plans to incorporate STEM-related field trips in the spring.
Volunteers from 100 Black Men of Baton Rouge serve as mentors for the LIFT initiative, offering weekly sessions focused on academic and personal development. ExxonMobil is providing the funding for the program and organizing STEM activities and field trips for participating students, ranging from sixth to eighth grade. EBR Interns start at Ochsner Hospital
Today was the first day for EBR interns at Ochsner Hospital! As they started their earn and learn journey with the Ochsner organization, they gathered for an orientation at the Ochsner Discovery School, where orientation met practical application and instruction.
During the orientation, the interns were introduced to the Ochsner organization and its mission. But it wasn’t just about sitting through onboarding instructions; they had the chance to roll up their sleeves and assist with a group activity for Discovery students. This “hands-on” experience allowed them to engage with the 4th and 5th graders attending the school - while the students learned proper hand washing techniques. On the Interns first day they experienced the first “hand” impact of instruction and collaboration.
Over the next three weeks, each intern will rotate through various departments within the Ochsner organization. This unique opportunity will not only enhance their skills and work experience but also give them a comprehensive view of how the hospital operates.
Ms. Heidi and the Discovery staff welcomed our five students. Their interest, energy and ideas will undoubtedly contribute to their career interest in medical related fields.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System’s Office of Workforce Development has been awarded a MERA Work-based Learning grant in the amount of $21,875.00. The grant funds will be utilized to provide students with targeted workshops facilitated by professional consultants focused on workplace readiness, including training in leadership, corporate etiquette, conflict resolution, time management, and communication skills. Additionally, the grant funds will also cover the materials and supplies needed for successful implementation of the workshops.
This grant will afford students the opportunity to strengthen the foundational skills necessary to succeed in any work environment, increasing their likelihood of successful internship experiences and securing future employment. Students gain hands-on experience modeling real-world settings, building transferrable competencies in leadership, work ethic, corporate etiquette, self-efficacy and professional behavior.
The desired outcomes include preparation for internships, apprenticeships, and entry-level jobs, increasing the likelihood of securing employment post-graduation. Additionally, students will be better prepared to enter college or technical programs with a strong foundation in professional skills, enhancing their academic and career success.

Congratulations to Istrouma High School’s Patricia Cooke, who was named the 2024 Louisiana ProStart Educator of Excellence. “Being voted Teacher of the Year by my peers here at Istrouma for this school year and then to be selected as ProStart Educator of Excellence by the Louisiana Restaurant Association makes me proud — lets me know that my labor is not in vain,” said Cooke, who is a family and consumer science teacher, ProStart instructor and mentor at Istrouma High. “I actually just love what I do, although teaching was not my first career choice, but I am glad that it has been my most fulfilling career choice.”
Cooke has been an EBR Schools educator for 26 years, including 21 at Istrouma.
Cooke enjoys preparing students for real-life experiences in the hospitality, restaurant and tourism industries. “I guess I can say that my classes develop the whole child to be productive, critical thinking, problem-solvers in the restaurant and hospitality industry. Students who complete my program are given scholarship opportunities and hospitality and culinary college course credits at many of the universities and culinary arts schools around the country,” Cooke said.
This week we were awarded the Educational Award of Excellence from GBRIA, Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance (Top Award)
