CALL FOR PAPERS: "WHAT IS ASIA? CHANGING BOUNDARIES AND IDENTITIES IN CONTEMPORARY ASIA", PARIS, 26-27 SEPTEMBER 2016

Today, 'Asia' has become a key term in academic, economic, and political discussions alike. Despite the frequency of its use, however, the content of the notion of 'Asia' is extremely complex and diverse with its borders and definitions constantly renegotiated and reinterpreted. In order to explore such complexity and diversity in the region, GIS Asie, together with its international partners, proposes an initiative "EURASIA" as a means to enhance communication and leverage the expertise among Asian studies researchers in Europe and beyond.

As part of the EURASIA initiative, this multilateral and interdisciplinary conference aims to provide an arena to discuss various contemporary issues in Asia with a particular focus on its changing boundaries and identities. We also have a plan to publish a journal special issue based on the contributions to the conference. Detailed information on publication terms will be given to the authors during and after the conference.

We invite paper proposals from various fields of Asian studies. Proposals can be related, but not restricted to:

- Geographic and conceptual maps of Asia

- Cultural identities of Asia

- Economic and demographic challenges in Asia

- Regionalism in Asia

Paper proposals (maximum 1,000 words in English) together with a short description about the author(s) should be submitted as an email attachment to dir-gisasie@cnrs.fr by the end of 30 June, 2016 (CET). The scientific committee will review the proposals and the result will be out in mid-July. Selected authors will be asked to submit papers by the end of 20 September 2016 (CET).

The meals during the conference will be covered by the organiser and some travel grants will be available on the competitive basis.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE:"ASIA-PACIFIC RESEARCH IN SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES", UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA, 7-9 NOVEMBER 2016

Universitas Indonesia invites scholars and graduate students from around the world to submit abstract for the Asia-Pacific Research in Social Sciences and Humanities - Universitas Indonesia (APRiSH UI) Conference, taking place in Depok, West Java, Indonesia from November 7 to 9, 2016. The Conference will provide an opportunity to share interdisciplinary perspectives in various areas of social sciences and humanities, through presenting papers and attending other panel presentations. CCKF-ERCCT, TŰBINGEN UNIVERSITY, SHORT TERM RESIDENT FELLOW PROGRAM

The CCKF-ERCCT at Tübingen University was founded in 2008 and has become a CCKF Overseas Center in 2014. Its major objective is to promote and facilitate postgraduate social science research on contemporary Taiwan and scholarly cooperation between Europe and Taiwan.

The European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan—A CCKF Foundation Overseas Center(CCKF-ERCCT) at Tübingen University runs a Short Term Resident Fellow Programme, which is an invitation to join the centre for a period between six and twelve months directed at Ph.D. students or postdoctoral researchers from Europe or Taiwan. The programme offers a monthly allowance of EUR 350, basic health insurance, and a one time travel grant of EUR 500. The application deadline for the winter semester 2016/2017 (17 October 2016 to 11 February 2017) is 15 July 2016, the deadline for the summer semester 2017 (18 April to 29 July) is 15 February 2017.

TAIWAN LECTURES SERIES, THE UNIVERSITY OF ROMA TRE, 2013-PRESENT

The University of Roma Tre has organised a series of Taiwan lectures since 2013, covering Taiwan culture, literature, cinema and history, and two intensive teaching courses of Chinese language. The Director in charge is Professor Rosa Lombardi, Chinese Language and Literature, Rector's Delegate for the Cooperation with Asia, Scientific Board Advisor for the Humanistic Library, Dept. of Foreign Languages, literatures and cultures, University of Roma Tre.

TAIWAN STUDIES PROJECT, JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY, KRAKOW, POLAND

The Institute of Middle and Far Eastern Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow obtained a grant awarded by the ROC Ministry of Education in the 2015 edition of the Taiwan Studies Project, as the first beneficiary of this project in Poland. The three-year grant (October 2016 – September 2019) will complement the establishment of a Taiwan Studies Centre (May 2016) at the Institute of Middle and Far Eastern Studies, which will coordinate its implementation. The grant will support both didactic and academic activities, as well as cultural events. At the same time, it will help expand and strengthen a network of scholarly exchange between the Institute of Middle and Far Eastern Studies and higher education and research institutions from both Taiwan and Europe, particularly the Central European region. The objectives that fall under the scope of the grant include: broadening the Institute's curriculum with a series of Taiwan-related elective courses held by faculty staff and visiting professors; organizing workshops for students from Poland and neighbouring countries, as well as for students from Taiwan; organizing regular Taiwan studies lectures for students and the general public; inviting Taiwanese and European scholars for short-term research visits; organizing a conference and a seminar; increasing library resources on Taiwan studies through the purchase of books and multimedia materials, and compiling an e-learning course on Taiwan.

SPOTLIGHT TAIWAN PROJECT, 2016, ORIENTAL INSTITUTE, CZECH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Taiwan Spotlight project at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences began in 2014 and finished in March 2016. The organisers had two goals for their activities in 2016:

Firstly, to introduce Taiwanese filmmakers and representatives of film industry to One World Film Festival, which is the biggest festival of documentary films in Central Europe. The representatives from Taiwan attended several workshops. The workshop, "A Film Festival Meets a Film Festival", was designed for directors of film festivals to start a new cooperation. Taiwan Film Institute was presented with opportunities to cooperate with Verzio Human Rights Film Festival (Hungary). Meanwhile, Taiwan Film Institute also negotiated with One World Festival in the Czech Republic to organize a joint programme in the future.

EATS's collaboration with the One World Festival in 2016 was a result of the Spotlight Taiwan activities in Prague in 2015, when former EATS Board member, Tana Dluhošová, worked with EATS Secretary-General, Ming-Yeh T. Rawnsley, to organise "Taiwan Documentary Week in Prague: Vitality and Sustainability of Taiwan Documentary" (please see the 2015 EATS annual report for details). Many international and industry connections were forged at the time and culminated to further exchanges in 2016.

Secondly, the Taiwanese guest attended East Doc Platform where two documentary films from Taiwan were shown. One of them was about diverse cultural identity in Taiwanese aborigines (Mountain). The second one was about Taiwanese quest for democracy (God Speed Taiwan). In between the screenings, panel discussions were organised to help the audiences learn more about Taiwan. The event was attended approximately by 100 people. The panel discussion was moderated by KateřinaProcházková, who is a journalist (Czech Public TV), and the panellists included:

  • Lin Leh-chyun, the Deputy Director of Taiwan‘s Public Television Service Foundation (PTS)

  • Teling Chen (Vice President of the Institute)

  • Su Hung-en, director of the document, Mountain

  • Olga Lomová, Charles University in Prague

  • Niki Alsford, Oriental Institute

  • Martin Hála, sinologist and sinologist focusing on contemporary Chinese politics

While several key personnel was continuation of the "Taiwan Documentary Week in Prague: Vitality and Sustainability of Taiwan Documentary" in 2015, Niki Alsford is currently an EATS Board member and Tana Dluhošová is the local organiser for the 2016 EATS Conference in Prague. Therefore, we consider Spotlight Taiwan Project in Prague a part of EAST outreach achievements in 2016. The event was translated from Chinese and English to Czech, and so it could target as broad an audience as possible. RECENT MOVEMENT AND ACHIEVEMENT OF EATS MEMBERS AND ASSOCIATES

  • Cheng, Isabelle joined the Advisory Board of the European Research Centre for Contemporary Taiwan in July 2016.

  • Heylen, Ann (NTNU) has received a 2 year MOST research grant (2015-2017) to apply digital humanities (DH) methodology to 17th century Dutch Formosa manuscripts, entitled "Mapping Mobility through 17th Century Dutch Formosa Historical Writings: GIS on 17th Century Dutch textual Information in Taiwan and related to the Spatiotemporal Mapping of the Region". The grant is part of a combined project with five collaborating researchers "Old Maps, New Views: Commonality of Interest in Spatial Humanities and Shared Technical Infrastructure, Core Projects Development". David Blundell (NCCU) as the principal investigator of the project, and Oliver Streiter (NUK), one of the collaborating researchers were also present at the 2016 EATS Annual Conference in Prague.

  • Ku, Shushiun, University of Leeds, passed her viva and obtained a doctorate degree in June 2016. Her thesis is on Taiwan cultural industries and policies.

  • Rawnsley, Ming-yeh T. received a publication grant awarded by the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for Taiwan Cinema: International Reception and Social Change (eds with Kui-fen Chiu and Gary Rawnsley), to be published by Routledge in 2017.

  • Shih, Weichu, Lumière University Lyon 2, successfully defended her oral examination and obtained doctorate degree on 27 June 2016. Her thesis is on histories of Taiwan cinema.

  • Zemanek, Adina is editing special issue of the East Asian Journal of Popular Culture on "The Many Faces of Taiwaneseness in Contemporary Popular Culture". It is anticipated that the special issue will be published in autumn 2017.
