About the local organizer

The University of Zurich, founded in 1833, is the largest in Switzerland and consistently ranked among the top 100 Universities in the world. The East Asian Department, comprising a Japanese and Chinese Studies Department, was established in 1950. Since January 2013 the East Asian Department has become part of the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies (IAOS) 東方學院. The Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies is the center of research and teaching on Asia and the Orient at the University of Zurich (UZH). It aims to position itself nationally and internationally as one of the leading institutions in the field. By bringing together the disciplines of Chinese Studies, Indian Studies, Islamic Studies, Japanese Studies, and Gender Studies (with a focus on Islamic societies) within one institutional structure, the University of Zurich’s strategic focus on Asian and Oriental studies has become more prominent within the University, the international academic landscape and amongst the general public in Switzerland.

Teaching focuses on the acquisition of language skills at an academic level including historical forms of languages as well as on comprehensive area-specific knowledge in culture, economics, history, literature, philosophy, politics, religion and society (BA-level). This is supplemented with training in theoretical approaches and research methods (MA-level). The curriculum of the Department of Chinese Studies includes courses in Taiwan history, society and ethnic issues, and is supplemented with lectures by academics from Taiwan, and with cultural activities related to Taiwan.

The Department of Chinese Studies is closely associated with the academic journal Asiatische Studien / Études Asiatiques, which provides a forum for the publication of research articles dedicated to past and present cultures and societies of Asia and the Orient in Switzerland and is published by the Swiss Asia-Society.

You are most welcome to display your book(s) or distribute leaflets during the conference. For your reference, past information for the Book Launch at the 2015-2017 EATS Conference can be found here.

ACCOMMODATION

All delegates will be staying at the same hotel. We have pre-reserved 100 rooms (40 double and 60 triple) at theIBIS Budget Hotel close to the airport. The hotel has a tram line (n.10) which drives directly to the University main stop (Universitätsspital) from where participants will have to walk 4-5 minutes downhill to reach the conference venue.

Rooms cost 75 CHF per room and 12 CHF per breakfast per person (therefore, if there are two occupants in one room the price for breakfast will be 24 CHF plus 75 for the room). The two deals are only valid together; meaning one cannot get the room for 75 CHF without the breakfast for 12 CHF. Otherwise the room would cost much more as a starting price so please do keep this in mind and do not try and bargain this with the hotel staff.

These 100 rooms have been pre booked for 4 nights (Check-in on the 3rd of April and check-out on the 7th of April). All conference participants are kindly required to get in touch with the hotel staff directly at: H8480-BO@accor.com so that you can confirm your booking and arrival/departure dates directly with the hotel.

EATS will sponsor 1 night + 1 breakfast for each person who is a Conference delegate (i.e. speakers and panel chairs), irrespective of whether that person takes a single room or shares with another participant. However, if you share with another delegate member, the hotel will deduct 2 nights & 2 breakfasts from your total bill. If you stay in a single room or if you share with a non-delegate member, the hotel will only deduct 1 night & 1 breakfast from your total bill.

If you would like to share a room, but you don’t have a roommate already, please send an email tolara.momesso@eats-taiwan.eu who will put you in contact with others in the same situation.

Deadline for your reservation with IBIS Hotel is the 20 February 2018, by which date you will have to communicate to the hotel staff your reservations, exact dates and travel companions - if any - by using the codeEATS2018. Please note that it is important to refer to the code EATS2018 in your email subject so that the staff of the hotel will know you belong to the EATS group.

Tourist Tax:

All the above mentioned prices do not include the tourist tax applied by the city of Zurich, which amount to 2.50 CHF/pers/night. This amount should be paid in cash by each participant directly to the IBIS Budget Hotel together with the additional nights, not paid by EATS.

Map of hotel:

Closest tram station to the hotel: Glattbrugg-Unterriet

TRANSPORTATION

From the Airport:

Take the number 10 tram from Zurich Airport in the direction of Zurich Hauptbahnhof until tram stop: Glattbrugg-Unterriet. Then walk for about 250 metres (3 minutes).

LUNCHES AND COFFEE BREAKS

Coffee breaks and buffet lunches/box lunches will be available during the three days of the conference, for conference speakers and paying participants only.

MAIN CONFERENCE DINNER

The official conference dinner will take place on Wednesday, April the 4th at the ETH Dozentenfoyer, starting from 7.00 pm. Dinner will be paid for all paper presenters and paying participants.

POST-CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES

A post-conference tour of Zurich old town will be organised in the afternoon of Friday. More details about this will be included in the 2nd Circular.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Local weather:

The climate is moderate with no excessive heat, cold or humidity. In spring and autumn, the daytime temperature range is 8 to 15 °C (46° - 59° F). Depending on the altitude the temperature range may vary. It is highly recommended to visitors to pack a sweater, good walking shoes, a compact umbrella and/or a light rain coat. In spring (March to May) the trees blossom and the meadows turn green. Sometimes in April the winter returns for a short period and sometimes there are summer conditions as early as May. For more information before your trip, please check here.

Electric plug:

Switzerland has its own standard Named Type J, however, the Europlug, also known as the type C plug, is compatible with all continental European outlets (types E, F, J, K and L). If you have devices that use the Europlug, you can already plug them into Swiss sockets with no problem at all.
