The IBDP Year 1 students undertook a commendable initiative during Ganesh Chaturthi. With the spirit of community service and celebration- they organised a workshop for fifth graders, guiding them through making a Ganesha idol with clay. The students, divided into teams, took on the responsibility of mentoring the young minds. The environment was full of anticipation and curiosity as the fifth graders eagerly awaited the chance to mould their own Ganesha idols. As the workshop went on, the students found themselves immersed in the role of mentors. They provided hands-on assistance, ensuring that each group had the necessary guidance to create their unique Ganesha sculptures.
The room buzzed with creativity, laughter, and the palpable excitement of the young artists. One of the most notable aspects of the workshop was the personalized attention the students devoted to each group. They patiently explained clay moulding and shared insights into the symbolism behind Ganesha. Collaboration, responsibility and leadership were key aspects of the workshop- all crucial tools for the IBDP students. Moreover, they witnessed the fifth graders' enthusiasm, reminding them of the joy and simplicity inherent in the act of creation- this mutual exchange of knowledge and inspiration was a two-way street, leaving both the mentors and mentees with a sense of fulfilment and connection.
Throughout these activities, our learning outcomes were with issues of global significance and learning to work collaboratively and effectively as a team. We demonstrated initiative by planning and executing our presentations and showed perseverance in refining our ideas and delivering them confidently.
Testimony
“It was a truly enriching experience, guiding the fifth graders through making the idols. Witnessing their enthusiasm as they moulded and shaped their interpretations of Ganesha was truly heartwarming. It reminded us of the impact that a simple act of guidance could have on a child's understanding of art, culture, and collaboration”
