In September 2023, our CAS Coordinator, Ms. Shwetali Patil divided our class into 3 different groups. She assigned us 3 different topics, all of which comprised of some sort of involvement with a major global issue - Sustainable Product Designing, Right Of Education For Children, and Racism. The teams were told to create presentations and talk about these crucial topics to ensure that they were presented well in our class to educate all of us.All groups created PowerPoint Presentations to spread awareness about the importance of these topics in today’s world. Moreover, these presentations impacted all the students in a positive way as it allowed them to be more understanding and appreciative of what they have, how they are being educated, etc.
Sustainable Product Designing helped us all to learn about how products must be created in order to reduce the total amount of waste in our environment, how there is a vast amount of waste that occurs due to production of goods, the ways in which multiple products are being made in order to reduce wastage and the overall level of pollution was mentioned by the students. The presentation on Racism explained how people are categorized into different groups in the society based on their color, ethnicity, race, etc and the solutions on how to overcome racism in today's world were explained thoroughly . In addition to this, the presentation on Right To Education For Children in today’s world made sure to create an impact on all IBDP Year 1 students to be grateful and appreciate the excellent education that they receive.
The facts that mentioned how some unfortunate children are unable to receive any education were disheartening and moreover, helped the students to be more appreciative of what they receive and understand the value of the education. All in all, these presentations brought knowledge and facts that were previously never heard and as a class, all learnt so much that it was indeed an enriching experience.
The teams also learnt to coordinate amongst themselves to practice for the presentation and everyone’s public speaking as well as research skills were enhanced. Not only did these presentations bring in teamwork and perspectives but also, various different elements that helped bring the issues to light as well as shape how there are so many problems in the world today which can be overcome if we work together and the smallest steps can be taken by all the students starting from the own classroom to make this world a better place to live in! Throughout these activities, we had several learning outcomes- engaging deeply with issues of global significance and learning to work collaboratively and effectively as a team. We demonstrated initiative by planning and executing our presentations and showed perseverance in refining our ideas and delivering them confidently.
Testimony
“It was a great learning for all of us as a class through all the 3 presentations: racism, need for sustainable product designing, and child smth smth (insert the group name). I was in the team: the need for sustainable product designing, which allowed us to explore various products and how creatively they can be designed to make them more efficient and sustainable. A few of the products included reusable makeup wipes and even a multifunctional bag. Overall it was really great to see everyone pitch in more ideas and also share their own perspectives.”
