Open an image in Photoshop - it can be of anything.
Using your text tool, put text over your image. It can say anything, but choose a font that is bold enough that when the image goes into the text we will be able to see what it is and recogize it.
Make sure that you image layer is unlocked and move your text layer below your image layer.
To go Layer on your top menu bar and select create clipping mask.
Your text should be in your image!
6. Crop your image to fit around your image.
7. Add a new layer, drop it to the bottom and fill it with a color, gradient, or image.
8. Use your Blending Options to create shadows, highlights, borders, etc.
9. Save as a JPEG and add to your portfolio.
Digital Silhouettes
Creating:
Standard 1.1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work by exploring digital tools and methods, like using Photoshop’s clipping masks to create layered images.
Standard 2.2: Organize and develop artistic ideas, including the arrangement and manipulation of layers, blending modes, and textures within the clipping mask.
Presenting:
Standard 4.1: Select, analyze, and interpret work for presentation. Students can present their work in digital portfolios, explaining their artistic choices and techniques (e.g., why they used a clipping mask to achieve a specific effect).
Responding:
Standard 7.1: Perceive and analyze artistic work, critiquing their own use of layers and masks or that of others, focusing on elements like color, composition, and texture.
Standard 9.1: Apply criteria to evaluate digital art, including evaluating how effectively a clipping mask achieves the intended effect in composition.
Computing and Society (CAS):
Standard CAS.a.5-8.1: Demonstrate responsible use of technology. Students learn ethical practices around digital design, respecting intellectual property while creating or using digital resources in Photoshop.
Digital Tools and Collaboration (DTC):
Standard DTC.a.5-8.4: Use digital tools to produce creative works. Photoshop and other design software allow students to produce images using clipping masks, fulfilling this standard.
Standard DTC.a.9-12.1: Apply advanced digital tools to create original works. Clipping masks are an advanced feature that allows students to blend images and textures creatively.
Computational Thinking (CT):
Standard CT.b.9-12.1: Use decomposition to break down the task of creating complex compositions into simpler steps. Students can plan their designs by separating layers and effects to achieve desired results with clipping masks.
