FRENCH 4 HONORS  (414)

Prerequisite: B or better in 410 and teacher recommendation

In this course students will be moving from Intermediate Mid towards Intermediate High level of linguistic proficiency. Students will become more confident and accurate in their use of French by practicing their interpretive, interpersonal, presentational, and intercultural competencies. We focus on increasing proficiency and global competencies through our Notre Histoire materials. Units of study include: Beauty and Aesthetics: Visual Arts, Family and Community: Human Geography and Science and Technology: Extreme Weather Conditions. Students will also read French literature such as Le Petit Prince All of the course materials are aligned with our state curriculum frameworks, as well as ACTFL standards. Students in the Honors level will often have assignments that are more complex and more open ended than Level 2 students. This course is taught exclusively in French.

In this course students will be moving from the Intermediate Low to the Intermediate Mid level of linguistic proficiency. Students will increase their ability and their confidence level in French through communicative activities that practice their interpretive, interpersonal, presentational and intercultural competencies. The curriculum provides students with many opportunities to increase their proficiency. 

Units of study include: Beauty and Aesthetics: Visual Arts, Family and Community: Human Geography and Science and Technology: Extreme Weather Conditions. Students will also read French literature such as Le Petit Prince.All of the course materials are aligned with our state curriculum frameworks, as well as ACTFL standards. This course is taught primarily in French.

FRENCH 5 HONORS (417)

Prerequisite:  B or higher in 414  or B+ or higher in 413

In this course, students will be moving from the Intermediate Mid to Intermediate Advanced/Advanced Low linguistic proficiency level. Students will  increase their proficiency as  they are tasked with higher level interpretive, interpersonal, communicative, and intercultural activities. They will interpret audio interviews, react to photos, present information and interpret authentic texts. Units of study will include Contemporary Life: Way of Life,World Challenges: Social Consciousness and Science and Technology: Discoveries and Inventions. Students will also read French literature such as L’Etranger. All of the course materials are aligned with our state curriculum frameworks, as well as ACTFL standards. This course is taught exclusively in French.

AP FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE (412)

The AP® French Language and Culture course prepares students to achieve intermediate-high to advanced-low levels of proficiency in Interpersonal, Interpretive and Presentational Communication. Additionally, students develop an in-depth understanding of the cultures and traditions of the French speaking world through the study of authentic resources, including but not limited to, print, audio, and audiovisual resources, as well as literature, essays, newspaper articles, and emails. Students are challenged to think critically to compare and contrast their own culture with that of cultures in the French speaking world. Students refine their proficiency skills and acquire the confidence and knowledge to discuss topics related to global AP themes: Families & Communities, Global Challenges, Contemporary Life, Personal & Public Identities, Beauty & Aesthetics, and Science & Technology. Advanced grammatical structures, academic writing skills, sophisticated vocabulary, colloquialisms, creative writing, and other key tools are taught so that students can produce, understand, and appreciate authentic French.

Prerequisite: B or higher in German 3,  B+ or higher in German 3 Honors and teacher recommendation.

This course is for students who are ready to substantially improve their presentational, interpersonal, interpretive and intercultural communication skills. It provides an increased opportunity for idiomatic usage and self-expression, both oral and written. A great variety of selections are introduced in this course, such as: short stories, plays, and original German film. In fact, German film in the context of the discussions of modern German life are an integral part of this course. Students will develop profound knowledge and understanding of German language and culture through the lens of history. This class is mainly conducted in German. Students will work towards an Intermediate Mid proficiency level if taking level 2 and Intermediate High proficiency level if taking at the Honors level.

GERMAN 5 HONORS (457)

Prerequisite: B or better in German 4 Honors and teacher recommendation.

Taught exclusively in German, this rigorous course is working towards advanced proficiency in interpretive, interpersonal, presentational and intercultural communication. Through the thematic integration of authentic sources, students will learn to communicate with control, clarity and cultural savvy, refining the skills they have previously developed while gaining the confidence and knowledge to discuss various topics. Students will immerse themselves in language and culture learning through German films and authentic German TV programs, current events, projects and the study of culture, civilization and German literature from different time periods. This can include fables, short stories, poetry and memoirs. The works read and watched will be thoroughly discussed in class to deepen communication skills, comprehension and vocabulary. Course work will include oral reports, written compositions and text analysis.

SPANISH 2 HONORS (426)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 1/1Adv outstanding performance and teacher recommendation.

In this fast-paced course students will continue to improve their overall language proficiency skills, and develop a more complex vocabulary. Students will be expected to incorporate varied sentence structures and be able to exchange information about themselves and others. This course provides an emphasis on interpersonal communication, interpretive reading and listening, as well as presentational communication. Students will interact with a variety of authentic texts and audio. Themes include: shopping and clothing, leisure activities, travel and getting around town, restaurant and foods, family, sports, planning a party, and household chores.  Additionally, students will explore the traditions, practices, and perspectives of the Spanish speaking world. The majority of instruction is in the target language. Students will work toward an Intermediate Low proficiency level.

In this course students will continue to improve their overall language proficiency skills, develop a more complex vocabulary, explore varied sentence structures and be able to exchange information about themselves and others. This course provides an emphasis on interpersonal communication, interpretive reading and listening, as well as presentational communication. Themes include: shopping and clothing, leisure activities, travel and getting around town, restaurant and foods, family, sports, planning a party, and household chores.  Additionally, students will explore the traditions, practices, and perspectives of the Spanish speaking world. Students will work toward Novice High proficiency.

SPANISH 3 HONORS (430)

Building on skills that were introduced in Honors Spanish II, this course will challenge students of proven linguistic ability to expand their understanding of language and culture and the precision with which they are able to speak about the present and past. A variety of engaging themes -- including travel preparations & planning a vacation, health and well-being, clothing, shopping and personal needs, art, myths and legends,  and personal narratives -- will expand students’ vocabulary and push them to improve their interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills. Students should expect to interact with authentic resources of all types, including a short story, and to be assessed regularly on all four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). This course is taught primarily in Spanish. Students will work toward an Intermediate Mid  proficiency level.

Building on skills that were introduced in Spanish II, students will continue to expand their understanding of language and culture and the ability to speak and write in both the present and past.  They will begin to use more complex sentences in their language in order to share their opinions, offer recommendations/suggestions to others, and persuade others of their ideas.  A variety of engaging themes -- including travel preparations & planning a vacation, health and well-being, clothing, shopping and personal needs, art, myths and legends,  and personal narratives -- will expand students’ vocabulary and push them to improve their interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills. Students should expect to interact with authentic resources of all types, including a short story, and to be assessed regularly on all four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). Much of this course is taught in Spanish. Students will work toward an Intermediate Low proficiency level.

SPANISH 4 HONORS (434)

This course is for students of proven linguistic ability who can speak and write in Spanish effectively. In this intensive and engaging course, students will aim to achieve an Intermediate High level of linguistic proficiency. Students will dramatically increase their vocabulary and master a variety of advanced grammatical structures. Students will make intercultural comparisons as they explore contemporary themes such as: Nature and environment, science and technology, family and society, and travel and tourism.  A variety of authentic sources will be analyzed and discussed, and students will be assessed in the areas of interpersonal speaking and writing, interpretive listening and reading, and presentational speaking and writing. This course will prepare students for the Spanish Advanced Placement course. The course is taught exclusively in Spanish.

Students will work to improve their proficiency in interpersonal speaking and writing, interpreting text and audio, and presenting information using practiced or memorized words or phrases and relying upon visual aids.  In this course, students will aim to achieve an Intermediate Mid level of linguistic proficiency. Students will increase their vocabulary and learn a variety of advanced grammatical structures. Students will make intercultural comparisons as they explore contemporary themes such as: Nature and environment, science and technology, family and society, and travel and tourism.  Students will be introduced to a variety of authentic sources to be able to compare and contrast their culture with the cultures of the Spanish speaking world. Students will be assessed in the areas of interpersonal speaking and writing, interpretive listening and reading, and presentational speaking and writing. This class is primarily taught in Spanish.

SPANISH 5 HONORS (437)

Prerequisite: B or better in Spanish 4 or 4 Honors and teacher recommendation

Taught exclusively in Spanish, this rigorous course is working towards advanced proficiency in interpretive, interpersonal, presentational and intercultural communication. This course is intended for students who have a love of the Spanish language and wish to continue their studies and increase their proficiency level, but are not ready for the challenge of the Advanced Placement level. Through the integration of authentic sources, students will learn to communicate with control, clarity and cultural savv, refining the skills they have previously developed while gaining the confidence and knowledge to discuss various topics. Students will immerse themselves in language and culture through studying the Advanced Placement themes of  Families & Communities, Global Challenges, Contemporary Life, Personal & Public Identities, Beauty & Aesthetics, and Science & Technology.  This course is for students who want to continue to be challenged without having to prepare for the AP exam. Course work will include oral conversations, cultural comparisons, written compositions and text interpretations and analysis. This course is taught exclusively in Spanish.
