Scholar Athlete Award

Dr. Mary Stauffer created the foundation to give back to the community of Downey where she had a successful medical practice. Her husband, Dr. Floyd (Dal) Stauffer was a scholar and an athlete and inspired the Stauffer Scholar-Athlete Award over 20 years ago. Dr. Dal was valedictorian of his high school and went on to graduate from the University of Chicago, receive his MD at Ohio State, and achieve his PhD at USC. He won several awards in college competing in diving, swimming, water polo, handball, gymnastics, and chess. He continued competing in the Masters Diving program to the age of 90, setting international records in 1-meter, 3-meter and tower diving. In 2006 he was inducted into the Masters Swimming International Hall of Fame and in 2007 into the University of Chicago Athletic Hall of Fame.

Downey High Athletes who have achieved a 3.5 cumulative GPA and who have lettered in a Varsity sport are eligible for this award. Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors receive $100.00 each. Seniors receive awards from $100.00—$500.00 based on their GPA and their overall athletic record. This year, across all grade levels, 209 Scholar Athletes are recognized - we are so proud to call these students Vikings and so thankful to Dr. Stauffer for recognizing their hard work, dedication, and talent!
