AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is a college prep G-level elective which provides students with organization skills, reading and writing practice, test prep., and encourages collaboration. In the AVID program students perform community service hours through various projects and visit at least 3 colleges per year as they navigate their four years at Downey High School. We also schedule guest speakers quarterly and students receive one on one help weekly from college tutors. Students who are in AVID all four years at DHS, and have completed 100 or more service hours, as well as maintaining grades and being accepted as a four-year university graduate with AVID honors. They receive special recognition in the graduation program, gold medallions to wear with cap and gowns and are also given award plaques and scholarships. Colleges recognize AVID as a prestigious program and in fact offer special admissions and financial aid. Through their own determination and with commitment and dedication, our AVID Seniors have greater ensured success when they begin college. We are so proud of our AVID graduating Class of 2021 and wish them the best of luck in college and beyond!
"We are so happy and proud to recognize this year’s AVID senior student of the year award recipient, Lesly Caceres. As a senior, she is taking such advanced coursework as AP Research and has maintained an impressive GPA. She is always wanting to help and give back and give it her all. She has accrued over 500 community service hours while in the Kiwin's club including playing a lead role in our Walk for Water Campaign in 2019. This year she was our AVID voice on Instagram and designed our current AVID Club Website. In addition, she created the AVID T-Shirt design for the year and helped spread the word for all the volunteer and service opportunities we organized throughout the pandemic. In the fall, she will be attending Grand Canyon University being the only student who will be leaving the state to dorm in uncharted waters, or lack thereof in Arizona! Best of luck and congrats to Student of the Year, Lesly!"

AVID GOLD Scholarship Recipient
"A few words about our Gold Scholarship recipient, Cynthia Ramos. An AVID student who comes from an AVID family and who will be a proud bobcat at UC Merced this fall where she will pursue a career in medicine. She is resilient, graceful, courageous, and a true survivor. She does not let hardship get her down. She picks herself up and keeps soldiering on, be it in academics or life. And we are so proud of her for choosing to venture out and become a student at one of our newest UCs. Congratulations and kudos and lots and lots of hugs to Ms. Cynthia Ramos! You are our 2021 AVID Gold Scholarship Recipient!"

"Deanna is a bright, enthusiastic, and resilient young lady. This young lady is quite busy. Not only is she in our AVID program, but she is a cheerleader and a leader in ASB. And has taken challenging AP courses and maintained a competitive GPA! And next year, she will grace the halls of Cal Poly Pomona as she embarks on her college career. We know this scholarship will come in handy as she begins having to buy all her own textbooks and supplies!! We are so very proud of her. She is a ray of sunshine and positivity and it has been a joy getting to know her these past years. We know with her ambition, she can accomplish anything and in fact, has already started well on the road to success. Congratulations Deanna Figueroa, our AVID Silver Scholarship Recipient!!!"

"Samantha Coronado is not only an amazing student who dedicates herself to advanced and AP coursework, but she is also the President of our AVID club and a mentor and role model to our underclass students whom she has so aptly led this past year in our meetings. She consistently impresses me with her drive and admirable work ethic. Whether she is helping create our recruitment video or contributing to class discussions, she puts forth 100% and inspires others in the process. This fall, she will be attending UC Irvine (go Anteaters!) where she will be majoring in Biology and preparing for her future career, and where she will hopefully put the Grand Scholarship to use!"
