The book American Like Me: Reflections on Life Between Cultures was written by America Ferrera to shed light on the experiences of being an immigrant or the child of immigrants in America. This book used a collection of personal accounts from prominent people in a variety of fields to create a platform for first-generation immigrants to share their stories. Our assignment was to read the introduction to the book, read Ferrera’s essay, and then choose an author from the book to read about and analyze. I chose the renowned Uzo Aduba. My finished work was presented in the slideshow.
During this unit, my class and I read a book entitled 10 Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now by Jaron Lanier. We were later divided into groups and asked to pick a specific chapter to analyze. Afterward, we created a slideshow presentation to teach the rest of the class about its contents.
For this mini-project, my class and I were asked to pick a song and analyze its lyrics. We had to identify and explain at least three literary devices used in the song. I chose the song “Into Orbit” by Alex Isley. Then, we used the slideshow on the left to share our thesis, claim, and evidence, arguing that our song was the “GOAT” (greatest of all time). Afterwards, we read and reviewed three of our peers’ presentations and left them feedback on their analysis and argumentation. We used this information from the presentations to write our final essay.
