During summer of 2020, in the midst of Covid-19, my family and I were wondering where to go for the summer. We then decided to take our 40 year old camper on a several thousand mile trip traversing across the entire continental United States. Sadly it couldn't make it all the way back after suffering a busted transmission on our way back in Baton Rouge, LA. after the grueling 3 week trip. Upon its return to Atlanta my Dad and I made the decision to restore its aged interior. The files to the left show our progress of gutting the whole cabin, cutting and fitting the insulation, covering it with the wooden ceiling material, and everything else in this extensive process.
This camp was the source of the majority of my service hours throughout my high school career. During the summer in-between my sophomore and freshman years I volunteered for two weeks at this camp. At the camp I took a leadership role teaching kids ranging from rising kindergarteners to rising sixth graders the concepts and applications of STEAM. After showing the kids what STEAM was, I lead a class of kids through different projects, including the construction of cars controlled via Bluetooth showing the process of constructing and building projects, and planning out the assembly of s'mores showing the steps and planning side of creation and STEAM.
At this camp during the second week I also acted as the soccer coach for kids in the afternoon. I led them through different drills improving their fitness and while giving them a fun time.
Volunteering at this camp gave me experience along with many qualities such as the patience needed to work with kids along with a better ability to lead. I feel much more comfortable leading which I believe may have lead me to chase the Captain position of the Varsity soccer team.
