Formative Assessments: results from teacher based assessments that determine the degree of learning that has occurred. This can be from (but not limited to) daily work samples, self video assessment (Flip Grid), guided reading groups, quizzes, projects, and exit tickets (questioning at the end of a lesson). The purpose for formative assessments is to guide teacher instruction - not necessarily for grading purposes.
Summative Assessments: results from the conclusion of a unit or study. This can be at the end of grade, end of unit / chapter in a core subject, or standardized test.
Standardized Tests: a test that measures individual performance using a nationally normed test in which results can be compared among peers. These test include several that are used in Durham Public Schools:
CogAT - a multiple-choice assessment that measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal questions. The test is group-administered, with secured testing procedures. The CogAT is given as an entrance exam into school's gifted programs.
Woodcock Johnson Test of Achievement - similar to the CogAT.
Iowa Test of Basic Skills - a standardized test designed for specific grade levels K through 8. The time allotted for the test and the levels vary according to each grade level.
