DPS LOCAL AIG PLAN
Gifted education isn't just a school wide program. District and state legislation helps determine advanced educational services for identified students. Practices, policies and regulations differ from state to state because there is no specific federal mandate regarding gifted education. In statistics gathered from the 2014-15 academic year, of the 1.5 million students in North Carolina Public Schools, around 10.9% were identified as gifted.
In accordance with North Carolina state legislation, DPS has aligned their local AIG plan to meet the needs of gifted students. Following the North Carolina Academically or Intellectually Gifted Program Standards (State Board of Education Policy ACIG-000 – June 19 2018) and Article 9B [N.C.G.S. 115C-150.5-.8], the DPS Office of Advanced Academics provides services for academically, intellectually, and advanced learners that support the statewide framework for quality AIG programming. The 2019-2022 AIG plan is aligned with the 2018-2023 DPS Strategic Plan and the Office of Advanced Academics Priorities with an emphasis on the individualized need of the advanced learner.
All elementary and middle schools have a full-time AIG Specialist trained to coordinate AIG services and provide differentiation for gifted/advanced learners. High School Lead Specialists help coordinate advanced programming, including Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate courses. Requests for AIG referrals or other inquiries should be directed to the AIG Specialist at Mangum Elementary.
DPS LOCAL AIG PLAN 2019-2022
The 2019-2022 Local AIG Plan has been summarized for you here. The three year plan addresses the legislative requirements for school districts in six (6) areas: student identification, comprehensive programming, differentiated curriculum and instruction, professional development, partnerships, and program accountability. Durham Public Schools uses this document to inform the local school board the goals and action steps need to accomplish the desired outcome. These goals are embedded in the DPS district master vision and mission statements. (See DPS Correlation tab for complete vision and mission statements.)
