THE INTEGRATED CURICULUMN MODEL (ICM) is designed to meet the needs of gifted students to develop their unique skills and talents in their own way and at their own pace. Teachers design curriculum that places an emphasis on overarching concepts, advanced content. higher order thinking skills, and real world applications. The rationale behind the ICM is that learning is synthesized across the core content and helps students transfer their learning to other settings.
Overarching Concepts
Through reading, reflections, and discussions students gain the ability to develop their own interests and use their content knowledge in new ways across the curriculum
Advanced Concepts
Gifted students are provided the opportunity to delve deeper into a content area rather than skim the surface. Advanced concepts provides students a chance to work together to support and advise each other in moving through the curriculum in a more rapid pace
Process-Product
Students explore a topic and conduct research to present to the class OR engage in a problem based learning experience
What are advantages of an Integrated Curriculum Model?
The experiences develop children’s attitudes, skills, and knowledge in a positive manner to help them make connections across the curriculum
Activities within the unit provide for a range of abilities
Activities can be both teacher-initiated and directed and child-initiated and directed
Whole class, small group, and individual experiences provide variety and ward off boredom
The curriculum provides opportunities for critical and creative thinking
Opportunities for teacher, peer, and self-assessment
Utilizes curriculum that appeals to the students' cultural backgrounds
Opportunities to experience learning as a meaningful whole resulting in a love for "life long learning"
Follows principles of North Carolina General Statute 115C-150.5 by providing differentiated educational opportunities for gifted students at stages of multiple development
