Guidance and input from parents and community leaders, and the leadership of state and federal leaders is crucial to the continuation of Gifted and Talented Programs. Parents who advocate for services that support our brightest students need to do more than “meet the teacher.” All stakeholders in gifted educaiton program need to understand the value and need for these programs and services.
LIST OF EFFECTIVE ADVOCACY STRATEGIES FOR THE GIFTED
What can a parent do?
1. Maintain a positive working relationship with teachers
2. Partner with teachers to provide mentoring opportunities and support the classroom
3. Support educator development to promote academic excellence in instruction (Ask about the types of staff development beneficial for gifted and talented students)
4. Support Gifted and Talented programs in the community (serve as a presenter or invite an educator to speak at a civic club)
5. Read the Parent Handbook and seek answers/clarify for questions
6. Review NC State Report Cards for School Performance (Report of AIG subgroups occur yearly)
7. Participate in local school and district meetings (Mangum PTO and Durham Public School Board Meetings)
8. Volunteer to serve as a community representative on school accountability groups

Promote special programs aimed at parental involvement for Gifted and Talented
Provide public transparency of student achievement data
Continue to promote staff certification in best practices in gifted educaiton
Involve parents in the site based decisions regarding curriculum
