We recommend that families purchase Applecare+, which is an essential warranty that covers the device for up to three years from the purchase date and includes up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Repair of accidental damage is subject to a service fee (an excess payable based on the type of damage) that is dependent on the type of damage.
Applecare+ can only be purchased directly through Apple 4 days after the purchase of the laptop via the link below where you can either sign in using the Apple ID associated with your new device or the serial number found at the bottom of the device:

In the event that AppleCare+ is not purchased for the device, it may be worth considering the option of adding the device to your existing contents insurance.
It is also imperative that a good quality hard plastic clip on case is purchased and attached to the device to reduce the risk of serious damage.
