Year 9 - Mixed Media Wire Portraits
Unit of Work - Portraits
Medium - Various weighted wire, wire mesh & cardboard
While students in Year 9 Visual Arts are studied the theme of Portraiture they delved into some more expressive forms. Their practical art making pieces have centered around recreating facial compositions. Appropriating the artmaking practice of sculptural artist; Alexander Calder, students have attempted to recreate expressive portraits using contour lines constructed from wire.

Unit of Work - Portraiture
Year 9 Visual Art students have been exploring the theme of Portraiture, studying the work of Mosaic Pop Artist Jason Mecier. This artist has spent over 10 years creating outrageous 3-D mosaic portraits of his favorite pop culture icons. Each portrait is created from the celebrities own discarded objects and junk such as broken sunglasses, make-up, gum wrappers, jewelry, deodorant, shoes, and other items.
Adapting Mecier’s artmaking practice, Year 9 students have been meticulously fabricating portrait mosaics of their own selected celebrities. Their assemblages are comprised of discarded objects and torn pieces of material, all intricately placed to create a visual representation of their celebrity.

Impressionism - Palette Knife Painting
Unit of Work - Modernism - Landscape Painting
Year 9 Visual Art students are currently studying Modernism. During their remote learning lessons they have eagerly embraced creating artworks that mimic the features and characteristics of Impression. The Impressionists used looser brushwork and lighter colors than previous artists. They abandoned traditional three-dimensional perspective and rejected the clarity of form that had previously served to distinguish the more important elements of a picture from the lesser ones. For this reason, many critics faulted Impressionist paintings for their unfinished appearance and seemingly amateurish quality.
Students created these large Impressionism inspired canvas works, completed over a series of practical zoom lessons. They used palette knives and acrylic paint mixed with Impasto to depict a sunset or sunrise, capturing the effect of light upon the translucent water.
Water Lilies is a series of approximately 250 oil paintings by French Impressionist Claude Monet. The paintings depict his flower garden at his home in Giverny, and were the main focus of his artistic production during the last thirty years of his life.

Beginning with a recreation of Monet’s Water Lilies on paper, Year 9 students applied relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes with emphasis placed on an accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities.
