My work' Biodiversity 2100' takes the form of a sculptural installation depicting a coral reef. The title ‘Biodiversity 2100’ highlights the prediction from the World Economic Forum that plastic pollution will outweigh all the sea life by 2100.
This work is constructed from discarded single use plastic drink bottles which have been heat treated in different ways either molded, melted, burnt, cut, and then hot glued together to resemble organic communities of coral. The ironic beauty of the plastic intrinsic patterns and detail is in contrast to the immanent threat posed by the tonnes of plastic dumped into the ocean on a daily basis.
Like the works of Courtney Mattison and Christine Holden, I aim to encourage in the audience both respect of the ocean environment and an awareness of the present dangers posed by human pollution. Should this awareness actually translate into a change in behaviour by purchasing products that use less plastic at the supermarket, even better!
As exhibited after NESA submission......
