Year 11 - Still Life Drawing
Unit of Work - Inanimate Objects
In Term 1, Year 11 Visual Art students are studied Still Life, Inanimate Objects. They focussed on developing form and space in their sketches, integrating a variety of different tonal rendering techniques to create depth. These white chalk pastel drawings of animal skulls are reminiscent of the Vanitas art movement; a style of art depicting objects that are symbolic of the inevitability of death and the transience and vanity of earthly achievements, reminding the viewer of their mortality.
Title: Expedition
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 100cm
Medium: Graphite Lead Pencil on Paper
The essence of my work stems from my interest in adventure and travelling. It is a compositional arrangement suggesting one’s fight for survival, against the natural elements. The theme of Inanimate Objects is conveyed in this work as the still life arrangement hints at the one’s disconnection from technology, instilling a reconnect with the natural world through a process of exploration. Ihis drawing is reflective of an expedition, a journey undertaken by a group of people or individuals, voyaging into the unknown.
Title: Vanitas
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 100cm
Medium: Graphite Pencil, White Charcoal
The work presents a highly detailed, realistic depiction of a goat skull, various citrus fruits, figs, pearls and glassware placed among drapery inspired by the Vanitas art movement of the 17th century. In the same characteristic manner of vanitas oil paintings by artists such as Pieter Claesz and Harmen Steenwijck, this work suggests the transient nature of time and life through a symbolic depiction of objects referencing materialism, death, reflection and time. The skull is used as a symbol for death and the transience of time, the pearls represent the emphasis on materialism in our contemporary culture, and the fruits are symbolic of decadence and luxury.

Title: “Light Bulbs” “Perfume bottles”
No. of works: 2
Unit of work: Inanimate objects
Size: 70 x 50 cm
Medium: White chalk pastel on black paper, graphite pencils on white paper
My artistic practice focuses on an idea surrounding illumination, reflecting the theme of light. It depicts an arrangement of intensified objects that propel a sparkling brightness, glowing light captured by reflections, heightened by the translucent nature of glass. The shape and tone become almost a kaleidoscope when the light collides on these translucent objects. This perception of light is appropriated from the influences of Georgio Morandi’s early vanitas drawings, artworks which helped implement the techniques and sense of fragmented light.
Title: The Academics of Life
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 100cm

This tonal drawing focuses on one’s innate personal space, hinting on both a recreational activity and career based around the formation of literature. Representing the theme of Inanimate Objects, this still life arrangement conveys an interior space of the formation of words. The symbolic objects within this drawing reflect my own personal interests, heightened by the cropped composition of the academic books, reading glasses and written pages of notes.
Title: Scented Fragrance
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 50cm
Medium: Graphite Lead Pencil on Paper
I am captivated by the translucent quality reflected in many perfume bottles. My still life drawing is a compositional arrangement of these objects highlighting value contrasts which become an almost kaleidoscope of shapes when looking at these transparent objects. We can see through glass because light passes through it. Our eyes see objects, such as these bottles by processing light waves reflected off the object. These semi-transparent, partially fragmented shards of glass have been the focus of my Inanimate Objects tonal drawing.
Title: My Space
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 100cm
Medium: Graphite Lead Pencil on Paper
My artistic practice focuses on an idea surrounding a reflection of my personal space. It is an intimate compositional arrangement of objects that are located on my desk. These objects, compromised of jewelry, art media and statues all have a personal significance as they were gifted to me and thus hold a nostalgic memory.
Title: Incense
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 100cm

The essence of my work is derived from a personal space within my home environment. The image captures a series of objects that are within this location. The objects themselves represent different aspects of leisure, creating a site that helps to relax one due to the meditative nature of the Incense burner and lamp.
Title: Balinese Culture
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 100cm
Medium: Graphite Lead Pencil on Paper
The essence of my work stems from a cultural reflection of the Balinese traditions. It consists of 2 main figures depicting traditional practices. The dancers and drummer reflect on a spiritual ceremony. Bali wood carvings are sourced directly from skilled artisans whose skills have been passed down from generation to generation. All wooden figurines and wooden statues are made from sustainable timber. These wood carving statues are hand crafted and unique. The 2 wooden sculptures and a large vase appearing in the background that I have included are of personal significance to me and become the point of focus in the artwork.
Title: Shoes
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 100cm

Title: Music Within
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: Each panel 70cm x 50cm
Medium: Graphite Lead Pencil, chalk pastel & charcoal on Paper
The essence of my work stems from my interest in music, in particular playing the guitar. I am moved by the comfort music can provide and have depicted a triptych as homage to this form of relaxation. Charcoal has been applied to highlight tonal contrast and my application of mixed media materials such as; music sheet paper and varying tonal paper helps to convey the layering of music.
Title: Luxury Vs. Innocence
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 100cm
Medium: Charcoal on Paper
The theme of Inanimate Objects is conveyed in this work as the arrangement of still life objects hints at the passing of time. The work forms a nostalgic connection with one’s past, referencing objects such as the teddy bear and camera to draw on the innocence of childhood. The conceptual undertone of the piece stems from the idea that once we grow up, wealth and luxury override our former childhood needs that are portrayed in the perfume bottle and coin bank.
Title: Musical Mars
Unit of work: Inanimate Objects
Size: 70cm x 100cm
Medium: Graphite Lead Pencil on Paper
This artwork is a tonal rendering of my Bass Guitar, referred to as ‘Mars’. This title reflects the God of War and hints towards a statement of change, lyrics featured within an inspirational song titled, Mars. The work depicts my personal interest in music; highlighting the importance of this recreational activity. I have created a compositional arrangement focussing on a lowlining cropped angle of this object. The use of directional lines aims to draw the audience into the space, emphasising the fragments that form this instrumental device.
Year 11 - Land Artwork Sculptures
Unit of Work - Environments and Installations
In Term 2, Year 11 Visual Art students are studied Environments and Installations focussing on Land Artists who produce site specific sculptures.
My site specific installation is comprised of tightly bound sticks which form an eerie formation of a hand that emerged from a tree. The work is purely comprised of natural materials, inspired by Land and Environment Artist Andy Goldsworthy.
This natural installation of stacking stones is inspired by the land artist Andy Goldsworthy. Through the art form of documentary photography, I have focussed on the simplicity of nature, carefully arranging geometric forms, merged into a natural surrounding.
