The move to online teaching has removed students from physical proximity to their teachers, peers and traditional learning spaces. This so-called ‘transactional distance’ can impact on the students’ learning experience and one way to reduce the transactional distance is to increase a sense of social presence in your Brightspace modules.

Social presence can be defined as the potential to project socially and emotionally as real people in an online community (Caspi & Blau, 2008). Your students experience a greater sense of your presence in a module when they can see and hear you!

There is value in presenting information to students using multiple means of representation. Also, video notes have an automatic captioning option making your video content more accessible. Video note files are stored automatically in your module and can be re-used as appropriate.

- Create a welcome message for your module - introduce yourself, introduce the topic, outline what students can expect while participating in the module etc
- Provide an engaging alternative to text-based assignment instructions
- Offer personalised feedback
- Engage with discussion boards - and just doing this will encourage your students to also use the discussion boards in this manner, creating a greater sense of student presence in the module too
- Provide very quick pre and post lecture updates e.g. to clarify a question raised in a lecture
- Liven up your announcements with video clips
- And lots more - it’s up to you!

You can add a video note anywhere where the html editor is available to you - typically in:

- Content Units - Announcements - Discussions - Quizzes (in individual quiz questions, and also quiz description/introduction) - Assignment instructions - Assignment evaluation and feedback
The term html editor may be new to you but you will be familiar with it - it appears frequently throughout Brightspace:

The Insert Stuff icon (circled in red above) is the first item in the html editor. Clicking on Insert Stuff gives you a list of options, including Add Video Note. Click into it and then just click New recording to start and Stop to finish. You can see yourself on screen as you create the recording and also preview it before completing its insertion into your content.

- Log into your Brightspace module
- Click into the relevant content unit, click the ‘Upload/Create’ button, and choose ‘Create a File’ and add an appropriate title
- Click the Insert Stuff button and select Add Video Note
- Click New Recording, record your message, click Stop Recording
- Click Next. Give the recording a title and, if you would like captions to be added automatically, select the audio language and tick Automatically generate captions
- Click Next and at this point you will have the option to preview your recording. If you’re happy with it, click Insert. If not, click back to re-record or cancel to exit the process
- After clicking Insert the recording will be visible in your file. You can also add explanatory text, links, other images here if you wish.
- Click Save and Close and your file, containing your welcome video will now appear in the content unit.

And keep it short! Brightspace will allow up to 30 minutes recording but less than five is optimum - your students will appreciate it!
