The HTML editor is the primary method of creating content within brightspace, allowing instructors to incorporate text, links, pictures, video, audio, and embedded html elements into their modules. Lecturers can use it to build great-looking media-rich, accessible, and responsive user experiences for their students. Chances are you've seen the HTML editor already as it is integrated across the brightspace platform in places like the content area, announcements, discussions, quizzes, and assignments. To get started with it, simply open a content unit within your module* and click on 'Add a description'. You can also use HTML templates (see below) to create custom web-pages within your module that appear as topics in your content units.

The HTML Editor is built for 'Inserting Stuff'.
The editor is very useful for quickly integrating content into your module such as video, audio, files, 'video notes', pictures, URLs, and internal course links. You can use various buttons on the editor's toolbar to quickly insert 'stuff' (1), pictures (2), and links (3) into your content.

In addition to being able to link to content on the web, you can also use the editor to create 'quicklinks' to other parts of your module. This can be very helpful in directing learners towards important materials, components, tools, and activities from across your module. Here are just some of the things you can link to:

Great for course communication and establishing lecturer presence, 'video notes' are brief videos that you can record with your webcam and insert directly into your module. You can find them in the 'insert stuff' menu and incorporate them wherever you see the html editor (e.g. in content, announcements, assignments etc.)They can also be automatically close-captioned for accessibility. - Open or create a content unit*
- Click on the 'Upload/Create' button
- Select 'Create a file'
- Pick a html template using the 'select a document template' drop-down
- When you're finished editing your template click 'save and close', it will now appear as a topic within your content unit
* In common D2L parlance, a 'unit' is generally called a 'module'
