Learner-informed knowledge is a prerequisite for integrating technology in an inclusive way so that students from all communities can effectively use it to achieve their goals.
At Mater Academy, our core value is equity. We prioritize preparing our students for college, helping them choose a career path, and ensuring success in their future lives. Our college-preparatory curriculum is robust, with the remarkable outcome of 25% of our seniors graduating with an Associate in Arts Degree. This achievement is a game-changer, particularly for our first-generation families.
Imagine the financial advantage of having two years less tuition to pay for! Our students can enter college as sophomores or juniors, significantly shortening their time to degree completion. In fact, some may even graduate with a master's degree in the same time it typically takes to earn a bachelor's degree.
Access to technology, digital literacy, and adaptable skills are not merely desirable; they are essential for our students to be truly future-ready. We firmly believe that committing to equity involves providing these critical resources. We take great pride in our partnership with organizations like Verizon, who help us turn our students' dreams into a reality.
Our community is predominantly a first-generation, Hispanic, population. Many of our students will be the first student in their family to graduate from an American High School and an American College. Because of these needs, we provide many points of contact for our families in both English and Spanish including a designated general question email, monthly parent, student and faculty meetings, quarterly parent-teacher conferences, a designated CAP Counselor and School Counselors for support.
Our student represent diverse communities and we strive to provide as many educational opportunities as possible including access to be a part of our Genius Squad team which is open to all students as an elective in Grades 6-12.

Book Creator App
This is an example of one of the amazing projects that our ELL students created about Spanish Speakers artists. They had to research about 5 different artists who sing 5 different music styles and show/explain to the rest of the classmates why they are so important in the Latin culture.
They could include videos, pictures, music.. some of them were really creative!
Self Reflection on the Element: Aligning
Strengths: How did your campus exemplify illustrating this element?
Next Steps: What could you have done differently to better align with this element?
Our plan is to host a technology night to have parents come and see the different apps at work that their children work with and have an idea of how they can help at home. Most of our parents work late shifts and cannot help students when they get home. At least by having a night where they can come and explore and practice with the same technology the students use it will help alleviate some of the questions and needs they may have.
