Learner-informed knowledge is a prerequisite for integrating technology in an inclusive way so that students from all communities can effectively use it to achieve their goals.
Technology, devices and real life project are consistently used in our classroom
Spanish influence in the USA
Students created a map of the United States with all the cities whose names are in Spanish.
A QR code near each city activates a mini video created by the students talking about that specific city.
TV Pro! Students use their devices as telepromters, cameras, and to collaborate creating the daily morning announcements
Présentez-vous
Students in the French class prepare dialogues. These are conversations to introduce themselves (ask and say their first and last names), spell out their last names. They have to write the script and then record the conversation using their iPads. Each pair develops their own working style.
Physics in Action
Using their devices and the Vernier software they learn about speed and acceleration.
More Hands on Physics experiments.
Project Lead the Way
Futures Biomedical Technicians.
Chemistry
Using google sheets collaboratively to record and graph Chemistry experiments. Students divided in small groups have different roles during the experiment. Some students are in charge of conducting the experiment, others are entering the results, and the latter must analyze the collected data.
Mater Art Gallery
Mr. Gopie and his art students do gallery walks to analyze and critique art pieces. After the visit, they write and share their impressions in an “art critic” style.
PLTW Human Body From digital to physical models
After learning digitally about muscle groups, students apply their knowledge to a real skeleton model using clay.
A different point of view. Enjoying our school from the sky!
Students in the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones) class flew them around the school and took pictures that they later edited using their devices.
Our community is predominantly a first-generation, Hispanic, population. Many of our students will be the first student in their family to graduate from an American High School and an American College. Because of these needs, we provide many points of contact for our families in both English and Spanish including a designated general question email, monthly parent, student and faculty meetings, quarterly parent-teacher conferences, a designated CAP Counselor and School Counselors for support.
Our student represent diverse communities and we strive to provide as many educational opportunities as possible including access to be a part of our Genius Squad team which is open to all students as an elective in Grades 6-12.
At Mater Academy Equity IS our mindset. To ensure our students are prepared for college, career and their future lives, we provide a robust college-preparatory curriculum graduating 25% of our seniors with an Associate in Arts Degree! This is a game-changer for our first generation families.
Imagine having two year LESS tuition to pay for!
Imagine entering college as a SOPHOMORE or JUNIOR!
Imagine graduating with a MASTERS in the same amount of time people typically earn a BACHOLOR'S Degree!
Access to technology, digital literacy, adaptable skills --- these are not skills that are nice to have, these are ESSENTIAL for our students to be truly future ready.
This is what a commitment to EQUITY means to us. We are proud to partner with organizations like VERIZON who help our students turn their dreams into a REALITY.
